Wanting sub-Playboy level nudity, in a game with hot girls, isnt enough to qualify for the "weirdo category", IMO. Its just something I'd laugh about and say "that'd be cool" when talking to a group of (hetero male) friends.

I would argue that the sex appeal makes the game known and the more known it is, the more people will play it.
That may not exactly be true. Sexual pandering is widely accepted as pretty much the lowest common denominator in order to draw attention (it kind of is, let's be real). It's a fact of life that sex sells, but if you rely upon it too much, it gives off the impression that you don't have anything of substance or higher quality to attract people with. We humans are supposed to have some higher-level reasoning and goals and such, after all. And with the added layer of the girls not being real (as opposed to, say, pining over a swimsuit/Playboy model), being hyper-invested in wanting more and more bikinis, especially in a game where they are not core to the purpose of said game (to beat people up), pushes it a little further into the "weirdo" category. Not as much as some other things would, sure. But..., it's there.

With that being said, of course the bikinis are gonna sell. I don't think anyone would be surprised by that. It's not lowest common denominator for nothing. But, many people are going to use the logic that if they are pushing the sex part this much, then it must mean that there's nothing deeper to grasp people with. And people may not want to be involved with that.

People may know what DOA is, but as someone already pointed out, some people have no idea it's even a fighting game. So, what is it exactly that TN wants this game to be known for? There is more to this game than just sexy fanservice. And people just wish the creators would spend a little more time making that clear. People are being turned off by the excess from the get go. And some people feel insulted that the creators think that fans need this much fanservice/pandering in order to stay interested. And that's what long-time fans and tourney goers kind of want to change. It's not about denying what "we" want. It's about getting more of the full range of the things that "we" want.

I'm not really trying to ruffle any feathers here. But, being all "moar bikinis, take it off, moar bikinis, gravure movies, yay!" without any interest in ever deviating from that is going to be seen as more base-level than other things, even general aesthetics. Is that right? I dunno.

As I stated before, sexy is fine. Sex is a part of life. But, making it all about that (especially as one-sided toward a specific sexual preference) is not what I personally want, and may be venturing into dangerous territory in terms of the game being taken seriously. I think that for the long term, TN has to balance "what gets them the most money" with how people view their product in general compared to their competition. Because people aren't going to invest hours upon hours playing the game at home or promoting tournaments because of the bikinis. Google exists. Random animu 637 with beach/hot springs episode exists. There needs to be something else on its face. The image has to be tweaked.

If people end up not liking the fighting system, fine. But, random Tekken or Street Fighter guy should at least feel enticed enough to come over and give a try to find out. People say "don't judge a book by its cover". But, I think we all know that the mileage varies on that...

...This was far too long of a response...

The 1M 5UCF download achievement is what I'm more curious about.
I'm not. They have let the most creative character sit on the back burner every single time. (Zack) I mean they didn't at least give his colored goatee back which goes to show you where their mind is at......

These last few pages... Now I know, why Hoya Destroyer got suddenly so mad in the "wanted costumes" thread.
I want you to know, Hoya Destroyer, that it's perfectly fine to be who you are in here. Just go ahead requesting your jerk -off material. I don't mind. But do you play the actual game sometimes...with both hands? XD

Speaking of which, when are we gonna hear about her release again I wonder? Spring begins in 2.5 weeks! =D crossing my fingers we don't have to wait too long.

Spring lasts until the end of may though... :( I'm in some DOA5U-low at the moment... Marie Rose would totally spark my interest again. I hope she comes soon...

Is little minor details really that necessary? I mean, as much as I want them to add Christie's gold inverted triangle earrings back to her C3, it would be nice if they do but it's not really something I can totally live without.

I still have a hunch it's either a free Tengu / Marie or a First Time Pack 2. (since First Time Pack was an incentive for being able to sold 500K copies of Vanilla 5 or somewhere along those lines)

I don't think it'll be Marie. It's my preferred option (mostly just a confirmed release date), but I doubt it.
Pretty sure it's not Tengu.
Also sure it's not going to be a First Time Pack 2. Considering what was in the First Time Pack, they would likely call the set something else. Something like Legacy Pack 2.
Or we might get Casual Collection Vol. 3.

21st March is the first day of spring unfortunately. Let's hope that Team Ninja have other criteria than actual date. Wating for Marie is killing me! I also hope Marie will bring more people to ranked cause it's dead on Xbox.

I don't mind if they renamed it so long as the contents are unique (and free) throwbacks like it was in the First Time Pack from Vanilla 5. I definitely would love to see Rig cosplaying someone else's outfit like how Mila did with Tina's DOA1 C1. I think he'll look good in Ein's DOA2 C2.

I wouldn't mind Legacy Pack 2 or Casual Collection Vol. 3 either. I just want actual clothes now.

I feel like Im covering the familiar ground with your first point, so I'll just say, I dont know whether the T&A factor will drive away more players than it will attract. Hopefully TN can get that balance right.
On your second point, all I can say is that I think the bikinis look good and Im hoping to see more. I think influential people read these forums, so I like to let them know what I think looks good.

I never asked for for any "gravure movies". That wasnt my idea, or something I have any real interest in. I think its good for TN's coffers though, if people want to buy it.
I can appreciate the rest of your points about marketing and public perception, but I still think the games lack of popularity (or whatever you want to call it) has a lot to do with the technical aspect, because that is what stopped me from taking the game seriously, until DoA5.
The game looks great and the animations are super smooth, but there is nothing there that will immediately impress a new player, who is familiar with other fighting games. In SF4, people are flashing yellow and doing super cancels etc all over the place. A noob will see stuff like that and say "I wanna learn how to do that!".
I dont think DoA displays or offers, a level of technical skill to aspire to, like Streetfighter does.

I got mad in the costumes thread because you insulted my costume suggestion. It had nothing to do with this thread.
I was hoping you (and people like you) would have the courtesy to treat my posts with the same indifference that I treat yours, when you post costumes that I dont like.
Observing your sophisticated level of humor, I suppose expecting anything like that from someone like you, was crazy.

I'll never understand you hardcore gamers.
Less than a month ago, you posted this as a wanted costume...

You even had the sense to request shoes/sandals (very wise) and liked my post, when I suggested she should lose the daisy dukes altogether.
Now, its not just TRI Mike Im skeptical about. I wonder how many of you other guys (who find the female figure sexually atractive) really believe what you post, or whether you're just trying to gain some kind of acceptance from a certain group of people on this forum?
Maybe Yosuke Hayashi had a real point, about everyone trying to save face? lol

There's a huge difference between having Tina wear a small shirt with underboobs (she already did in her main DOA3 costume) and having Lisa wear gemstones on her nippels or Zack wear a fucking sad halloween costume. The DOA girls are very pretty and that's fine, we all like that about the game and we're OK about them being sexy and a little revealing but lately, things have gotten out of hand.

If an underboob costume for Tina happened, I don't think many players would be scared away by it because it looks pretty and it fits her style and personality but I've already seen people leave because of the Halloween costumes and the gemstone bikinis are simply disgusting.

I wonder, if Team Ninja has any clue, how controversial their DLC with their western (or non-Japanese) core fanbase is. Seems to me, as if about 80% here are starting to get annoyed, even frustated.
They probably look more to their Japanese fanbase, which celebrates every new bikini, every new dakimakura and every new boob mouse pad as if it was New Year. XD (Is that the case?)
Yes, transforming the DOA-babes into total sluts brings them lots of cash, but I learned in marketing, that nurturing your closest fanbase, to keep them long term, is just as important. And they are obviously struggling to build a respected, competitive fighter like: Street Fighter, Tekken, Soul Calibur and Virtua Fighter are. They need a strong, growing core fanbase for this...not some fickle porn addicts.

Well said, but perhaps TN perceive their "closest fan base" as being the Japanese fans, hence they wish to keep them satisfied in the long term through bikinis etc.?

Yes, that sadly might be the case... I wonder, if the Japanese fanbase is even that much stronger in total numbers...

Exactly, the DLC bikinis were a cool addition when vanilla came out. All of them were very pretty and fit perfectly with each girl. The problem is that the new ones are too slutty to the point where it's weird and it feels awkward to explain why they're even there. And I must insist on the Halloween and Christmas costumes... I'd kill for a patch that allows me to filter every costume I don't like.

Isn't Japan less conservative when it comes to sexy stuff? Maybe that's why their Japanese fanbase is okay with the bikinis and other sexy merchandise.

But now there is many different bikinis. Let's just hope the japanese players are satisfied now...
