Very true, my bad. In Japanese anime and manga fictions I'm used to see characters similar to Marie Rose as the usual standard appearence for this role, but actually seems that outside from these realms there is a much more varied representation.
Thats because its a fashion style that existed way before being represented in anime/manga
Maybe its because of the picture but MR's hair seems rather short compared to the character shes supposed to represent, im actually curious to what changes they're going to make to Doas characters since im not really familiar to Senran Kagura.

So I watched the anime series (yes...all 12 of the real episodes) because they're only 20 minutes long each and I want to be able to recognize the designs chosen for each character.

It was a mediocre series at best that reminds me a lot of Sailor Moon (with obviously more boobs and pantsu shots). It did however exceed my expectations b/c the "special" episodes (i.e. pure fan service) are what I thought the normal episodes consist of. And while it is pretty heavy in the fan service department it did attempt to have a plot however superficial it may have been. But whoever said it was "dark" clearly hasn't watched enough anime (there was one point where the "shinobis" were scared b/c if the opposing school lost they would die...because ninjas dying in battle is a foreign concept to busty teenage girls...). The rest of the time they're being bff's having pillow fights, groping each other and getting over their fear of frogs. Not my idea of dark at all...

I will say though that I found the girls from the "evil" academy somewhat interesting at first (until of course the end when they realize that friendship and love brings them all together and bla bla bla...) and I do hope one of the DOA girls gets the one from that green haired chick (including the green hair).

Honestly even as an SK fan, the anime was pretty bleh. The plot to the SK games are better especially in Shinovi Versus with the two other groups of shinobi's where there is more deepness in it.

As for the green haired girl (Hikage), I think Christie will end up getting her.

Like was said, the anime is a pretty bad representation of the series as a whole. It's pretty heavily based on Hanzo's storyline in Burst, but there are quite a few differences. To give a bit of a comparison between the anime and Hanzo's story:

  • Asuka being afraid of frogs is just in the anime. The games don't mention it anywhere.
  • A few episodes, such as the beach training and the hiking trip are also unique to the anime, though Katsuragi's Forehead Flick of Doom is from a scene in the game, and there is a beach scene. Just no training involved.
  • Asuka's grandpa, Hanzo himself, isn't actually presented as the typical pervy old man. This is just in Hanzo's story, though. Hebijo's story and later games present him similar to the anime.
  • Hikage's character is very different. She's presented as more laid-back and indifferent, just doing her job without really caring, rather than the sadist thing she has going on in the anime.
  • Aside from a brief moment where Asuka has her wallet stolen and Homura gets it back, the Hanzo students never actually meet the Hebijo until after they initially attack.
As for why some people call it dark, later in the game may give a bit of an indicator (again, comparing to the anime, here):
  • Hanzo Academy actually has two scrolls. A Yin scroll and a Yang scroll. The scroll the Hebijo take is the Yang scroll, and Asuka is entrusted with the Yin scroll to help in the fight.
  • Dougen. Big, scary guy with one eye who's the main baddie in the anime? He's not even mentioned by name in Hanzo's side.
  • That whole thing about the Hanzo students refusing to fight the Hebijo after finding out they die if they lose? Never happens. Nor is there a technique that just kinda kills them when whomever casts it wants. Rather, Hebijo students are mandated to kill themselves should they fail a mission, and carry poison at all times for this specific purpose. It's very heavily implied that they all go through it, and the Hanzo students never actually find out about it.
  • Yomi never actually finds out that Ikaruga's adopted, and pretty much outright says she'd prefer death to her pity.
  • Homura learning the "meaning of friendship" has a very different tone. When Asuka says that it's thanks to her friends she made it this far, Homura solemnly responds, "And that's why my friends are dead..." Throughout her fight with Asuka, she's determined to avenge them. Then she loses, and falls to her death.
  • The Hebijo's deaths and Homura's grief/desire to be stronger summon forth this monstrosity as the school collapses. Asuka kills it, reunites with her friends, looks out into the distance and sees the Hebijo students' silhouettes standing in the distance.

ONNN another note, one thing I was thinking that would actually be really cool is, if they're wearing an SK costume, that character's theme is replaced with one of the equivalent SK themes. Kinda like how cameo costumes work in Tales games. Since SK has some pretty damn good music.

Also if I remember correctly, there's a part of the game that tells a really sad story about Katsuragi's childhood and I believe the anime doesn't have that.

I'm not sure if that was in Burst and, by extension, the anime. I could be wrong since I haven't played the original myself, but I do know that Shinovi Versus delves into Katsuragi's backstory quite a bit.

Alright. So.

Walked into GameStop, saw a NEW copy of Shinovi Versus on the shelf, asked why a vita game was 50 bucks. Turns out it was a complete box set collectors edition brand new. The actual CE box wsd behind the counter. Bought it immediately.

Now let's see what all the fuss is about, or if I should a bought another game for like 15 bucks instead.

I finally caved in and bought the digital download yesterday. Have a vita at school and the 3DS burst game looks like crap so I decided to skip out on that one (no offense to those who like it). I saw the anime and even if there are differences so far it's been pretty easy to follow along w/o playing the first game.

Gameplay doesn't hold a candle to Bayonetta and the camera angles can be a nightmare but I'd be lying if I said I didn't like it. It's hard to describe but it feels like I'm playing Devil May Cry meets Pokémon with boobs?

I will admit though it's surprisingly more difficult than I thought. I'm struggling to pass missions even on normal.

Oh my gosh! DMC with destructible clothing... Dante! Hubba hubba. If only Dante and Vergil were guest characters in Senran Kagura. Then I would play it.

Just so we're clear -- the destructible clothing feature DOA is planning on implementing also affects the male characters, right? Or is this just another lame female-only feature like the breast motion.

We'll be fixed soon, but my guess is that it's even more specific. Only for SK costumes.

Well i'm sure if you payed enough money you could get an engine for the males too. It would have to be helicopter dicks tho. That's the only thing it's allowed to be.

The 3DS games are actually pretty good, if you like side-scrolling beat 'em ups. They play pretty similarly to the Vita game, just with a different camera angle.

I agree with the DMC comparison, but where how exactly does Pokemon fit into the equation? Surely there's not some kind of monster-catching feature that I'm not aware of? lol

One of my main complaints is it has that MVC/bb/ gg problem with recovery, which is that you can't just get up, instead it makes you jump up to recover, leaving you vulnerable to continuous combos, so its damn near impossible to get out of a combo.

Yeah, it must be hard to describe if that's what you came up with in doing so, lol. Fuck.

I haven't played SK personally, but the main problem that I have with it, solely from just watching some videos, is that it seems like a very repetitive mash fest. It also looks crazy easy because in every video I've seen of it, the enemies seem to just stand there and let the player beat the shit out of them.

And again, I haven't played the games, so this is all coming from an outsiders uneducated viewpoint like the above paragraph, but I don't see any similarities with Pokémon.

lol idk. Maybe the cartooney art style or their secret ninja art just reminds me of summoning Pokémon (when they call their animals to attack).

When there's a bunch of enemies I agree it's a mash fest I keep moving around and pressing buttons. Against another shinobi though it does require some strategy which is what a lot of your battles will be. Even on normal I lose pretty regularly as opposed to Bayonetta where I could make it close to the final levels on easy very rarely dying.
