This Saturday, August 3rd, the third installment of Bay Area fighting game tournament BEST of the Battle III will be taking place in San Jose. This is likely to be the last big DOA5 tournament in the west coast until Ultimate drops. BOTB has been a strong supporter of DOA related events since the release of DOA5 in September. The staff for the event work do their best to make sure each event has something offer for all fighting gamers, especially DOA players.

West Coast DOA heavy hitters HajinShinobi, CrazySteady, Renarism, Shadow, and BOTB 1 champ NykNyks are strong favorites to duke it out for 1st place. BOTB 2 champ Punishere may attend the event to defend his title. Regardless of your skill, come down to the event for a day filled with fighting games. Recently, the guys at Eurogamer picked a great time to post an article about the Heart Of Gaming arcade in London. While Mark "Firebug" Starkey isn't the only one deserving credit in this article, it's goes without saying that the accomplishment itself is very gratifying and the recognition helps us realize the scope and scale of what we have on our hands and help do a better service for the community.

Shout outs to Joff and Bulletproof for being the number one soldiers in this struggle and Shadowforce for sacrificing his time and money to come and help us out on some important occasions where help was very needed (and playing some DOA with me when the place was quiet).

What matters now is to build something for the future, including the UK and surrounding European community and supporting our great players, from the stoic and seasoned English players, to the energetic Germans, to the old school French...

Just over two months from now, the first Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate major will begin. Players have been finalizing travel itineraries, reserving rooms or places in them, and picking apart DoA5U trailers to find something to give them an initial leg-up on the competition; it all comes together on September 14th. There's also a little something going on September 13th for the early birds, but we'll get to that in a minute. Emmanuel "MASTER" Rodriguez was able to get some time with Shimbori Yohei, the director of Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate, and ask him a few questions from the DOAWorld community. Be sure to check out the interview as there's many good questions I see asked often. For example, Shimbori comments on the network issues from Dead or Alive 5, Costumes and Stage DLC, Dead or Alive x Virtua Fighter, changes in the hold system, and even comments about a Emmanuel's desire to see a global fighting game tournament that has participants from Europe and Japan attend to take America's crown. Kicking off the ramp up to what is argued as the biggest Dead or Alive 5 tournament of the year, ShinBlanka has released the second trailer for The Fall Classic being held in Raleigh, North Carolina on September 14th and 15th. The trailer even gives Dead or Alive 5 a major spot in it to showcase how serious ShinBlanka, BigE Gaming, L.I. Joe, and SweetJohnnyCage are taking this game and this event.

It should be noted that with the recent announcement of Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate's release date being September 3rd, this event will be hosting a Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate tournament. The community is hoping to make this their biggest event ever, shooting for more than 100 entrants into the tournament. If those numbers hold true then you're looking at a pot prize greater than $1,000. This tournament is sure to be huge as it attempts to be a serious contender to that of Evolution.

The Fall Classic...

Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate: Core Fighters, a free-to-play version of the already announced DoA5U, has been officially announced and will be hitting PlayStation 3 (and potentially Xbox 360) day and date with the full retail release of the game. Currently slated for September 3rd, 2013 in North America and releasing the rest of that week in other territories, Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate is a updated version of the current release, Dead or Alive 5. Complete with new characters, stages, moves, animations, and system mechanics, this release will incorporate ideas and feedback from both Team NINJA itself as well as the fans. DoA5U: Core Fighters is yet another surprise from TN and it also represents something of an evolution on the basic concepts of a demo.

Core Fighters will include all online play modes, stages, and offline play modes, with the exception of the Story Mode. It will include Ryu Hayabusa, Kasumi, Ayane, and Hayate as playable characters out of the gate, with the option to...

This weekend we have two major events going on hosting Dead or Alive 5 across the world.

In the United States, SweetJohnnyCage will be running East Coast Throwdown V in Morristown, NJ. SJC has been running tournaments for a few years now, and is even one of the main event coordinators for The Fall Classic coming later this year. This year's East Coast Throwdown will be held in the same event location as the previous year: Hyatt Morristown. Dead or Alive 5 will be taking place on the Xbox 360 starting Sunday, May 19th at 2 PM.

It's official, the new Dead or Alive project that we were all teased to last week with a glimpse of Momiji, has now been confirmed by this week's Famitsu magazine via Siliconera as Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate.

The magazine didn't share much information beyond that, only highlighting that it will include Momiji and additional characters, stages, etc. which, of course, we all already know.

But with E3 only a few mere weeks away, you can definitely expect Team Ninja to drop a few subtle hints and teases leading up to the big unveiling.

Last weekend, the West Coast DOA scene had it's 2nd tourney major at NCR XI. The Road to Evo event took place in Sunnyvale, California from April 26th-28th. Over 25+ entrants for DOA5 alone marked this as the biggest West Coast major thus far in the game's lifespan. Congrats to Sweet Revenge, who flew out from Texas, for taking 1st place. Good to see that Florida hosted a DOA tourney! Unfortunately, I could not find any DOA related media from this event nor any information on who used what character. I personally don't recognize any of the competitors names but don't let that take away from the fact that they showed up to compete. Hope to see these names again in future events!

Just a quick heads up, GameStop is selling their copies of Dead or Alive 5+ for the PlayStation Vita as they receive them and many have started selling today. Check with your local store to be sure but this is nationwide. For our members from other locations around the world, check with your game shops as there may simply not be a street date at all for the title.

Please note that preorder DLC codes WILL NOT WORK until the PlayStation Store update on 3/19. Preorder DLC is live in the US. Trophies are also not syncing yet, but that may go live before the update. Be patient with those codes and don't become little rage monsters blowing up Team NINJA, Tecmo Koei, or GameStop on social media.

Some incredibly formidable competitors absolutely tore up Winter Brawl 7 this past weekend in Philadelphia, PA, with a few high profile upsets and a first win in a major for our Winter Brawl champion SweetRevenge. At the moment, the best way to check out the matches is to sift through the TwitchTV FreeStepDodge and Team Sp00ky accounts (main tournament and final four, respectively) but when we have direct links we'll update this post. According to Polygon, Vivek Shah, the CEO of Ziff Davis Media which owns IGN has sent out an announcment discussing a recent shake up in the 1UP, GameSpy, and UGO offices. There have been some editorial layoffs in each of the three sections, but some employees will be moved into the IGN Editorial Staff.

This isn't typically the news that I would put on the front page, but Ziff Davis also comments about the potential future of the IGN Pro League (IPL). Specifically, it looks like they are in discussions to sell off the league, but nothing has been set yet. Dead or Alive 5 was recently announced to be in the IPL game line up. Although there has yet to be an event to showcase the game, no word of IPL being sold or its future has been provided.

The 7th Annual GVN Winter Brawl, one of the long-time Dead or Alive tournament event supporters, will be starting in less than two weeks on February 23. Coming right off the heels of SoCal Regionals and Big E Gaming's North East Championships 13 it's time to see if XCalibur BladeZ can defend his North East crown from EMP Black Mamba.


The event has forgone the Tag 2v2 Pair Play event in favor of doing a Team Battle tournament that the GVN and Big E Gaming events are known for. Teams of two players will play in a team battle Singles setting on Saturday before the Dead or Alive 5 Singles event starts.

In addition, on Sunday there will be the return of the Dead or Alive 5 Tag 1v1 tournament to coincide with the changes made in the 1.03A patch.

Team NINJA has revealed the release dates for the long awaited version 1.03 patch for Dead Or Alive 5. Players on the PlayStation 3 will be able to get the patch next tuesdays on January 22, 2013. Meanwhile, those on the XBox 360 will have to wait another week, with their patch dropping the following tuesday, January 29, 2013.

In addition to this, Team NINJA has released the complete patch notes for v 1.03.

System Changes

Changes apply to both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions except where specified.

• Added new stage: Zack Island. After installing Ver.1.03, players can download the free Zack Island stage, which will appear in the Stage Select menu.
• Added the ability to upload screenshots to Facebook from Album mode.
• Added the ability to upload video replays to Facebook...

So the EVO 2013 lineup was announced just moments ago on Wakeup SRK, and it's the largest EVO roster in years. Dead or Alive 5, unfortunately, is not on the main roster. This is due in no small part to a lack of consistent offline support in comparison to other games. We've been on the upswing, especially after the solid showing at NEC, however we have a lot of building to do yet. This is something that we're still working hard on changing, but this is currently our reality.
