I could use some honest critiques on my Mileena Design

Artist Statement:
I used elements from her past costumes and drew inspiration from the design of Kitana's MKX Costume. I tried to tone down her sexiness at first but realized Mileena should always have that sex appeal to compensate for her terrifying face.

I also tried to make her appear more Ninja like.

I.....like it......BUT, it feels a little TOO close to kitana. Too "princessy", seems like going back to Mortal Kombat 2 when they were essentially the same.

Maybe...try without the bun, and make the ribbon tattered on the ends? I like the actual hair over one eye though. Be interesting to see Mileena with a pixie cut.
Maybe try without the shoulderpads, as well? That or add thighguards to go with them. They seem uneven for her, to show so much leg, but not enough arm. On anyone else it wouldn't be an issue, but its almost tradition in MK for shoulders and thighs to be bared together.


Also, minor detail, but it bugs the hell out of me when people hold sais like that (like most versions of Raphael), because it means they'd lose their fingers if they tried to use the sai correctly lol. (it can actually be held like that if only for stabbing, but you almost never see anyone using a sai for anything other than imitating Wolverine claws).

Yes my plan worked!

Ghosty honestly I think you could color a page quicker than it took me to figure out tones haha And at the end of it all I ended up going with a mostly tone-free style (I think it's one of those 'less is more' things).

But yeah Manga Studio is pretty sweet... it's mostly used by Japanese I think, hence why it's very tough to find good English tutorials.

I must be insane since I'm using the Japanese alternative "Clip Studio Paint Pro". The interface is completely in English, thank goodness XD
And you're right, less is always more. That's something I need to get back into the habit of applying with my more finished works.

I absolutely love Mileena, but I'm digging this design far more than the official one to be quite honest. NRS should be hiring you instead! I must agree with Argentus about the costume being a bit too princessy, as it's something Kitana would most likely wear. Still looks great on her though.
Unpopular opinion: Her face is her best feature <.<

Yeah the Princessness came from her desire to over-throne Kitana but I see how it can be unfitting for her personality. Thank you guys!!

That's a really obscure Capcom game called Red Earth (Warzard in Japan). Basically a boss-rush-type game like Alien Soldier, but with 2D fighting game mechanics instead. I highly recommend you check it out. It features some gorgeous sprite art and some of the greatest design work Capcom has ever done. Leo and Kenji were featured as playable characters in Capcom Fighting Jam. Tessa was also playable in SNK Vs Capcom Chaos and Super Gem Fighter. Mai Ling wasn't featured in any crossovers unfortunately D:

But yeah. I'm expecting to see a bazillion other Juri entries and just SF in general. I'm a sucker for everything obscure, so Red Earth was right up my alley. I'd have totally drawn Jin Saotome or anything related to Rival Schools, but I haven't been into either series for as long as I have with Red Earth XD

Hi everybody ! I use to only post my doa art on FSD but this thread is a nice idea !
So here my lastest work

I would like to improve my work and begin to create my own designs
May I have some constructive criticism ?

You have a pretty good grasp of anatomy and light and dark. If there was any criticism I could give you is that there are areas of your paintings around the edges that don't have as much polish as the focal point. Its kinda hard to explain but some areas of your paintings would have excellent gradation and other areas you would rely too much on a line instead of letting the light, dark and colors define the edge of the character. All in all I would say keep doing what you are doing because you are much better than I am at digital.

Also, work on environments and mechanical stuff(cars, engines and guns).

Again man, just keep doing what you are doing.

Yeah. In fact, I'm getting a yellow tint on the left pic instead. Just to be sure, you could convert it to Grayscale in Photoshop. If you have it that is.
