*Walks back into FSD after a month*
...Oh, hey, gaiz, are we doing this again? lol
I'm sure I've said plenty in this thread already, but if new people are passing by, I can give a refresher.
I don't really have a problem with sexy women per se. I don't even mind a bikini here or there. But I think that DOA5 Ultimate and beyond veered off into the abyss for several reasons.
1. I'm not a fan of devs showing blatant favoritism in their characters. There's always going to be a few "main characters", but TN has effectively written off the entirety of the male cast. Polygonal models, marketing, costumes, you name it. That isn't really fair to fans of those characters. And while they are a business, and businesses are just based on who's willing to pony up the money and not being fair, they are incentivizing being a fan of the female characters while discouraging people from the male characters, creating a weird, chicken-egg vicious circle where maybe the male characters could become more popular if they actually cared to put in an effort but they don't. Dudes can be sexy and/or appealing in other ways. Why can't I jet ski with Leon and Ryu? That'd be fun/funny as hell. But, maybe that would break people's harem fantasy...
Anyway, what it boils down to is that if you're going to create a character at all, why would you just neglect them afterward? But, good on them for at least giving the guys, like...2 beach outfits compared to the gals' 25+. And Ein is a thing, I guess. lol
2. With that being said, I'm not an idiot. Sexy women are appealing. I get it. But, their (this part of Japan's culture, really, and not just TN's) idea of "sexy" is lame, copypasta porn fetishes (nurse, maid, bunny, etc.) with no personality whatsoever. Creating compelling and varied characters doesn't matter, and that's hella annoying to me. The "sexiness" wouldn't be as big of a problem if they weren't cheapening the characters in the process. I'm not into some wish-fulfillment fantasy where I can frolic on the beach, watch (pseudo-)jailbait pole dance, and go on dates with ninja assassins and have them fall all over me for...some reason. Yes, the trained ninja with a kill count who knows where is just going to blush and cover herself up if you try to grope her? No. That's dumb. At the very least, your arm is coming off.
Are we really trying to just have DOA be a dating sim? I'm pretty sure either the director or the producer joked about that a while back. As long as it's generically cute and demure (read: Marie and Honoka), then people just throw all their money at it. I want the audience to want more than that, because that type of cheese is LITERALLY everywhere in Japan and all of these similar characters just blend into each other. But, obviously, I can't control a given populace. And if the populace doesn't care, why would the devs care? Sure, it's an international fighting tournament. But, who cares about interesting new countries and fighting styles when we can just have Honoka and call it a day? It's just sad.
3. The gameplay is paramount, and I really enjoy playing DOA (the fighting game). But, since I do like the gameplay, I only have minimal nitpicks and suggestions there, while...there's all this aesthetic and peripheral stuff that irks me to no end. And if there's a game with gameplay I like and the peripheral stuff doesn't irk me (it's getting to be a smaller and smaller group unfortunately), then I would choose that over DOA (and that would go for a lot of people). That's why this stuff is worth talking about in my view. We can act like DOAX isn't DOA proper, but it's never been walled off. The two sides affect each other. I have absolutely no sympathy for TN/KT when people don't want to see past all the cheesecake and get to the cool fighting game underneath because they are the ones in charge of the narrative surrounding their games. Maybe this is truly the type of game the devs want and...okay. But, I don't have to like it or support it if it continues along this road.
TL;DR: Fewer sex dolls, more interesting characters (male and female). Also, stop writing off the male characters (and perhaps older female ones). And quit with the copypasta.
I hope DOA6 is soon on the horizon. It's a chance to do a semi-reset on a few things. But, we're probably going to get 2 more Japanese high school girls and another blonde added to the game and then someone is going to comically fall into Honoka's boobs or something during the story mode...
