New stage is very likely DOA3's Azuchi

@Tyaren see? I told you they removed the reflective floor

You seem to be quite happy you were right... You know, that is actually really, really sad...

Tbf back then a single character didn't take like 80k polygons lol

Not all DOA characters have 80k polygons, certainly not the men. Also polygons are nowadays actually one of the least taxing parts in graphics. It's textures, shaders, lighting, image post processing etc. that demand most power. And the PS4 should be able to do this in a small and enclosed stage if it can do it even in an open world scenario in other games. You should visit the Graphics and Art Style thread sometime. ;)

Lemme quote one of my older posts from there about real time reflections! :D

The 4th best looking game of 2015 has one big graphical advantage over the number 1.... and that's mirrors with high quality real time reflections!

(See Robin hanging out in the background? XD)

(pics taken by me during normal gameplay, not during cutscenes.)

Correct real time reflections (in actual mirrors, the hood of cars or in the water) are often hit and miss and costly to implement, even in today's games. Now you might say: "Wait a sec, but there were also real time reflections in by now very old games! O:" No, these games did actually cheat the viewer.

Crazy, but they actually took the time and effort to build fully modelled and textured rooms and character models twice, just a little less detailed, to have them pose as reflections... Cheating but still looking awesome to this day. ;)

So why can't they at least cheat in Last Round? Serious question. Nuh, not really serious. We all know why. ;)

I wonder why they didn't put that last bit of effort into the reflective floor? Maybe it was just to much work for a free patch stage? I still think the stage looks good without it though even if it is embarrassing that the old games did it better.

Yeah, it would have been too time consuming for just a free update (not want to call it lazyness... >.>).

Lol. okay it was laziness then. Could it possibly be that the way this games graphics are it isn't possible for them to have reflective surfaces? I have no idea how any of that works so I don't know.

Best case scenario is all their time and effort is on Ni-Oh

I really want to see some of the stuff they've shown with Ni-Oh to be applied to doa6.

Its probably due to the amount of work it would take, considering they are releasing this update for free. I don't really mind, the stage still looks good, it didnt have the reflective surfaces in doad either.

In the case of DOA3, this is accurate. It was two separate character models. One heavily low-poly for reflections, and the other to be used in the fight. I'm not sure about the stage itself though as I never found any suggestion that it had a reflection model.

As for DOA5, do I miss it? Sure. On a casual level it would bring that extra sort of polish. Am I upset about it? Not really, as I'm fine with losing the reflections at this time if it means getting the higher resolution (more shader intensive) character models for now. DOA3's biggest problem in terms of showing its age is its texture resolution - but it was Top of the line at the time.

Well, just look at the characters' shadows on the ground in doa5 (or doax3), and you will understand that it was impossible to expect having real time reflection on the floor or on water.

Wasn't DOAD a 3DS game though... >__> There's light years of power difference between the 3DS and PS4.

It also just dawned on me that if they would cheat in Last Round like in DOA3 with a second pair of lower polygon models posing as reflections, they would have to make models for all the about 1000 costumes that are in Last Round by now. XD

So glad this stage is back! :) Played DOAD a couple months ago and was thinking about how great some of those stages including Azuchi would look on current gen.

It really says a lot about how well 3 holds up, no? As someone who goes back to play 2 ultimate, 3, and 4 regularly, I can see that 3 still manages to look good in comparison to 4 which doesn't look that much better than ultimate.

I still have my xbox set up in my room just in case I'm feeling nostalgic, was playing DOA3 and 2U today. I hope they make an HD version of those sometime.
