Tomonobu Itagaki On Dead or Alive 5: “My Daughter Was Totally Ruined”

If that's the case, why is DoA5U no less popular than the older games? We may be upset with some things, but it's still doing better. And to add insult to injury. Let's face it, TK is making more off this.
well lets be honest, the last dead or alive (4) came out back when Online and internet wasn't as ubiquitous, everyone just learned from magazines and G4tv, etc. Its just a lot easier for games to get coverage and communities to build now. "DLC" was barely a thing back then, as well.

VF has one of the best looking stage backgrounds for a fighting game next to Tekken dafuq. The characters on the other hand... Ew. Clothing textures are the best but it's just the faces that need to be fixed.

Anyway, can we just stop calling TN "The New TN" please? It's the same team, It's just that Itagaki and like 15-20 other people left. The people who PRODUCED the DOA games yes, PRODUCED DOA5 are the same people that produced DOA1, 2, 3 and 4. Hayashi and Shimbori have been under Itagaki since DOA2, and I believe we have the same composer for the Soundtrack of DOA5. (Feel free to correct me on that if you know I'm wrong), it's just that they didn't create music that was fitting to the characters, but to the stages. If you put the music back onto DOA5's stages, you will clearly hear that the music fits the stage's mood. Sanctuary has fitting tribesman music, and Sakura has Japanese Noh Theater type music. While the other DOAs had music that fit the character's personality:

Zack had Hip-Hop, Lei-Fang had Traditional Chinese-sounding Theme, Jann Lee had Blood-Boiling fighting music.
(The DOA4 and 5 main menu music was gutter trash though.)

Y'all complained about the stage music, and TN showed with DOA5U that their stage's music is actually still good: Forest, Lost World, Lorelei's, and the other new stages had great music in them.

An idea for DOA6 would be, remix every character's DOA2 (Or DOA3-4 depending on the character) theme, like DOA:D, cause they did a SOLID job on the soundtrack for that game, and the DOA2 theme are the more iconic ones, so the nostalgia would come back. It's like how street fighter characters have their own unique and iconic themes (Guile and Ken, yes boiii).

/My little talk. But let's please just stop berating TN, and shit. Please.
I'll stop giving them shit when it stops LOOKING like shit. Also, 4's menu music was about on par with 2 and 3. 5's was gutter trash though, yes, same with their credits theme, and oh god the terrible online lobby music.

I will KEEP pushing for DOA to go back to being one of, if not the best looking fighters, instead of one of the ugliest like it became with 5. Just saying "but the faces are realistic!" isn't cutting it.

That said, oh my god this things I would give to see a DOA done with the graphics of GGXrd. Cel shaded DOA *drools*

I agree but just correcting your facts:
  • Hayashi's first recognized game with the team (that we know of) was Dead or Alive 3
  • Shimbori's first game with the team was Dead or Alive 2: Ultimate
  • The composer (who's name escapes me at this moment) only did one track for Dead or Alive 5. Don't know which song that was, and I also don't know if he ended up doing the new songs from Ultimate onwards (which in my opinion have all been great).
Also, 4's menu music was about on par with 2 and 3,

No, the only good music 4 had that wasn't exclusive to a character ending were the Remix soundtracks in the club. However, those were all from DOA2U so they aren't considered DOA4's music.

I'll give you the internet thing, but that still doesn't explain the kotaku article. We asked for softporn. We're still asking for it.

But the character themes were from DoA4. And i quite like them, actually. As for the rest of the music, i'll be honest and admit that it clearly wasn't a priority. Sounds like they hired composers who did low-budget movie music (or were just out of school). It's not bad, it's just terrible compared to the existing themes. They're sort of out of jive with each other. They probably figured the DoA4 music would carry the rest of the game. My guess is that it was a deadline issue.

It's more than just faces. Aside from clearly rushed collision detection, the body mechanics are good, too. Stances are noticeably more like real people (hell, Hitomi noticeably slouches). The characters actions and reactions in the story seem human, too. The way Christie was talking to Eliot in that one scene (ignore the english voice acting) reminds me of people i know. Just watching "DoA4 story mode" on youtube, i feel completely different. Things are being talked about, but it's very minimal. I feel like if they took the story out, no one would even notice. I'm not saying DoA5 has a good one, but at least they tried something. If they keep trying, they could do better than Street Fighter (and this comes from someone who enjoys the total bloody-beatup-then-shake-hands storyline).

I like my realistic look, thank you. We have enough anime fighting games, thank you. I really hate what it has done to street fighter.

Ew, no. Because I'd have a feeling that it would look like Yaiba, which nobody wants.

1) To both of you, Yaiba and Street Fighter look nothing like the clean cel shading of Guilty Gear Xrd.

2) Just to Kohlrak, yes animations are better, the actual characters themselves are for the most part okay, aside from the men being lower poly, and there being quite a few costumes that are noticeably low res with their textures. But the stages, menus, etc are all hideous compared to past games. It all adds up.

On the story mode though...I feel like they SHOULDN'T have tried, considering they threw the actual DOA story out the window (mostly) in favor of a mini ninja gaiden adventure. The actual tournament was only glanced upon. There may not have been a real story mode in past games, but you stll knew there was a tournament, why each person was there, and what they got out of it. If they do another story mode, they need to stop making everything about the ninjas, its really old now.

while I do still prefer how doa4 looks, I don't feel this is a fair comparison. That doa5 scene has just soulless stares.

You need to see an optometrist, ASAP.

While you have every right to your own opinion, I'm sure glad people like you are in the minority. I would hate for TN to implement any of your (terrible) suggestions. You can keep your Itagaki-drenched DOA4. I love DOA5 and I look forward to the bright future of this series.

You're right I was exaggerating a lil but my point stands overall when you compare the two games
That doa5 scene has just soulless stares.
Alright I feel like this is pure bias blinding you. If you want to talk about soulless stares

The eyes in 5 are more expressive in every way. This is one of the few games imo that actually got eyes right. They're not exactly realistic but they look like they could be real people. There's animation that the eyes in 4 could never do. Lemme whip out this Christie gif I've used 200 times to prove this point

yes but not in that particular Jann Leifang gif lol

I still don't see it. xD Jann Lee perhaps but he's on a train zoning out as he waits to get wherever he's going. Here's another one of him

tumblr_nhdpjdTTnw1t5k8i7o1_500.gif
off topic, but I can't see him as the type to ride a train lol. I imagine him going all Might Guy and just running alongside the train lol.

but yeah in that gif, the dollface actually managed to pull off more emotion than that doa5 faces somehow lol. Jann Lee and Leifang don't even change expression or eye direction there. I don't think Fang is even looking AT Jann. Thats why I said it wasn't exactly a fair comparison.

Zack in DOA5 PROVES that characters are NOT expressionless. Also, in DOA4, the character's mouths didn't even move during a taunt.

I don't think a permanent rictus grin counts as an expression, really.

Im still saying that was a bad example though. An expressionless doll making a slight head tilt showed more life than leifangs and jann lees unmoving stares combined lol.

Also, when I say doa4 looks better, I meant more than just faces. I was talking about the overall more vibrant image, background, etc.

Zack only smiles in his openings that are not the Zack is ready to bring the noise. In battle, he is not smiling, in the fight he looks angry af. Though I prefer DOA2-4 Zack in looks, I know for a fact that Zack has more expressions in DOA5.

Personally I'm one of the people that never complained about the DoA5 soundtrack (I only thought that hearing in loop the rap it was a bad choice); and on the opposite I found even a nice thouch to hear the music for the stage changing when you are able to hit the opponent with a power blow.

Tbh, DOA4 does not hold up well, imo. The character models look like shinier plastic dolls. The only model that looked decent to me is Brad Wong, because he's actually handsome in that game. Otherwise, the realistic look of DOA5 character models is what I vastly prefer.
