Tomonobu Itagaki On Dead or Alive 5: “My Daughter Was Totally Ruined”

No you missed on the entire dead or alive experience.

If doa5 is just a drunken brawl in an alley, then past doas were wwe title matches with fanfare, hyped up entrances, endorsements, character roles, crowd pleasers, etc.

The action may not be as real, buy it was way the fuck more entertaining :)

I didn't miss the DOA experience; I have the best DOA experience right now. As far as I am concerned DOA is a fighting game where the environment is everything and this title has delivered for me over other fighters in that regard. The stun system of 5 is better than past iterations, the hold system is better than past iterations, literally almost everything is better than stuff from past games. The only things I would like to see from this game are the return of the douchebag cinematics where people would ride a character down a staircase in a level, better visuals and slight tweaks to the okizeme. The graphics of the game are fine but the lighting is pretty dull IMO so it makes things look less beautiful. I get they were trying to go for a realistic look but there are ways to do that and keep the game from having depressing backrounds.

I don't have the time or money to go to tournaments so I can only play online.

That said I was always hesitant to join the "competitive" community because I don't like the general impression and attitude I've gotten from it, which boils down to "a fighter can't be serious or competitive unless defense is minimized so attackers can do rushdown and long combos without interruption.", among other mentalities like "its not broken so long as its in my favor", or the similar, "don't fix a character, just break everyone else."

I played 3, 2u, 4, and 5. 5 is the only one that didn't even feel like a dead or alive game no matter how I look at it. It feels like just another fighter, whereas past doas really stood out on their own.
So a casual then, gotcha!

I find it interesting that the more casual players tend to prefer DOA4 and the competitive players tend to prefer DOA5. DOA5 can't be that bad...

DOA5 isn't bad; People will complain because it now requires you to know a little something about the games mechanics and have fundamentals to do well instead of touching somebody once then getting a 35%+ combo off stun > launch or getting braindead okizeme (*COUGH* DOA4 *COUGH* force tech system is dumb this is not a 2D fighter.) Don't even get me started on the hold damage from past games outside of 3. In 3 I accept the hold system because hi counter throw is doing like half life so ggs trying to hold somebody when you have less than half life left. In DOA2 hold damage was rivaling or outdoing strike combo damage on some if not all characters. That....is a problem.

When I'm in the mood to blow off steam online, I prefer 5 (I actually haven't picked up 4 in a few years). I love 5's mechanics and aesthetics, but the story didn't appeal to me, which is why I technically don't care for it.

I'm curious as to what he'll do for DOA. He can't make a new fighting game that's similar to DOA or else he'll get sued, so what can he possibly change when he isnt even working on the game anymore? It's pretty mind boggling

My personal ... also similar people.

I agree with everything you said, and I'm going to extend the following part.

I repeat that in all this is a shame that the good old casual aspects of the game - part of the identity of the series - were partially forgotten, otherwise we fans would have got a perfect DoA (at least in my opinion). And appear even a shame that just with DoA5, dicatated from the new policy of the producers, there is a bigger focus on the sexy elements that cover the rest of the game in the title that has to offer the most technical elements in the series. However TN seems aware that DoA5 is missing the first ones and I'm optimistic for seeing back an attention on these matters in future (not in DoA5LR but rather in a new title as DoA6).

People should also understand the position they were in too. It is my belief that the change in stage, music, and art direction was trying to make a statement: That this is not the same Team NINJA that was with Itagaki. Yes, I believe you can take that statement in the negative and the positive, but the point was made that this was a relatively new team extending the franchise. They didn't want to use the same character models that had been in use for nearly 10 years, or even the same menu user interface since Dead or Alive 3, and the system was not going to be a DOA4.4. They decided to actively listen to the playerbase that plays their game more than any other, that's something Itagaki would never do. Yes, he used competitive "Virtua Fighter" balance testers for DOA4, but that's like getting Guilty Gear balance testers for Street Fighter 4.

Lastly, I believe that they didn't want to make the stages orthodox in design. I believe that it had to do with a combination of many things. One of which was probably Koei's frugal finances and micro-management. A project has the combination of Time, Money, and Scope. Further, it's my theory that Koei cut the development of DOA5 short, by about a year (The same can probably be said for NG3). That's why DOA5 Ultimate came out, and I accept that as what we should have recieved as the "vanilla" DOA5, and what was most likely planned. Koei I believe does not care for the Dead or Alive series as a design, and that's most likely due to it not being one of their core games, but a series by the weak company they purchased. Notice, Dynasty Warriors has many female characters, and actually has a huge following in Asia, but there aren't any "towel" or "bikini" packs for that game. That's something I'm sure they know would bring them money, but sadly, I don't think the Koei founders would approve of the shamefulness in their game. However, it's okay to be done in that other game series.

With that said, the "casual" DLC content such as the bikinis and "sexy" packs bring in a lot of money for Koei-Tecmo. Trust me, if it weren't selling we'd be stuck with DOA5 v1.01 and would have never seen Ultimate, Last Round, Arcade, or any of the updates. Those casual purchasers are what keeps funding the balance updates to our game. You would prefer games like Soul Calibur V which were left with two patches that crippled the competitive system (by accounts of what I've seen/heard from players)? I sure wouldn't. The competitive community has been the largest it's ever been, and has had pretty consistent tournament results (of which is around six to ten times the amount previous iterations had).

I would have a pretty good laugh at Itagaki getting sued for making a DOA as he no longer owns the title.

I am so happy he left Team Ninja! as I prefer playing on my Playstation 3. DOA5 battle system is much better compared to the older ones, which @Tenryuga has stated.

He is an old man (47 years old) & spending his time on giving DOA5 a bad rep. He should focus on his Devil bla.blah title & get a life.

I don't really hate Itagaki, but he would've made me mad if he made another xbox exclusive DOA title....i had to buy an xbox 360 which i did NOT want just to play Dead or Alive 4. And i have to buy a $99 hard drive for the xbox so i can play the older DOA titles. Also, the anime look was cute, i'm not gonna even lie since i fell in love with Kasumi that way, but he used the exact same models with minor texture and hair tweaks in all his DOA games. The realistic Kasumi completely wipes the floor with doll Kasumi, hands down.

I personally love the realistic kasumi. She is also designed to fit her age "19"
Marie Rose on the other hand, has a very babydoll face, huge dollish anime eyes. her age "18" is false. Team Ninja can not hide her age as the DOAD got banned in Sweden, Denmark and some other Europe countries.
Marie Rose's voice, face, body is designed to fit her "Baby Teen" age.

DOA5 still has the DOA-touch just less plastic & more realistic now (with anime eyes) It's a great change.

I just my feel-good happy poppy colors and animu doki doki lollipop kawaii desu graphics back. I'm sick of so many games trying to be all nitty gritty.

I think Itagaki is just bitter over the game's recent popularity. The games is starting to appeal equally to both competitive players and casual players like myself. I doubt Itagaki would even consider throwing dirt and sweat physics on his perfect anime models. All he payed attention to was clothes and hair physics and photorealistic stages.(Which i loved)

DOA5 is doing so much better compared to the other DOA titles.
I totally agree with you on the stage thing.
Itagaki didn't design Marie Rose. I really love how her costume 1 turned out, it's really beauitful!
Her moveset is pretty fun & cool! She has very fun taunts. Her Japanese voice actor did an excellent job!

This just proves Team Ninja puts their heart & soul into DOA5. not only big jiggly boobs.
However the new female character might have "Big jiggly boobs" but she might be an interesting character? or she has an interesting moveset!

Itagaki would only destroy DOA.

Marie was a work of art! We would've never had Marie Rose if Hayashi wasn't the new producer of DOA. When i first saw Marie Rose, i was so taken aback and knew she would be my third favorite female in the series. She doesn't need a curvy body or big boobs to show her attractiveness, she shows it through her cute appearance. Plus i always had a little thing for girls who wear lolita.

I am so thankful Hayashi created Marie Rose~! The first time I saw her I knew the moment I would be maining her for sure! as she is a very adorable cutesy fighter!
DOA5 would totally not be the same without Marie Rose! She is a great addition to the game.

You know what? You should make an essay on that on your spare time like I did... why you mained her and stuff while you're still in high spirits.

A long time from now, you can look back on it and feel all warm and fuzzy inside, should your spirit waver.
