Lopedo

Lopedo won the most talent filled Dead or Alive 5 tournament to date.
Lopedo also won this tournament with a character many of us felt was far too powerful to be tournament legal going into the event – but the fact is that’s not his fault. Everyone had access to the character and we as a community had an opportunity to have the character banned. Lopedo won using the tools that were allowed to him and if a tournament is a competition then the point, should be, to win and that is exactly what he did – win.

Oh and he’s also sitting on a 3rd place finish from final round, earlier in the year, which more than a few bemoaned because of his Alpha usage but again, everyone could use her and he certainly wasn’t the only top 8 player who went that route [See: XCalibur Bladez]. Ultimately, the golden rule is “The One with the Gold Rules.”

Lopedo has the gold – Will you bend the knee?

Sweet Revenge

When you think of people train to win you should think of Sweet Revenge.
This guy puts in the hours and it shows. He doesn’t switch characters as soon as a patch drops; He doesn’t lose a match go immediately swap characters – he trained for that. You have a character he has an answer - its Gen Fu or Sarah.

Sweet Revenge had a lackluster [for him] showing at TFC by tying for ninth place. Yet, when you’re tied with guys like Chosen1 and Electrified man; placing four spots up from names like Perfect Legend, Mr. Wah and Shade Swift Eye, that’s far from a loss. Most recently he’s coming off two 1st place finishes - winning NEC14 and DID 9 by beating Electrified Mann and XCalibur Bladez, respectively.

Did he do enough?

XCalibur Bladez

If we were judging on a 24 month cycle, this accolade could only go to this guy.
We don't however so we have to look at what he did in the judging period and – goodness, goodness – he did a whole lot of work this year. Winning Final Round was, to that point, probably the greatest tournament accomplishment a player had attained, ever. His bracket wasn’t the most taxing at the event, sure - only offering Julius Rage, CXThomas and Dallaz as his major foils – but his run through the top 16 was highly impressive culminating with a thumping of both Rikuto and Lopedo to take the crown and to put an exclamation point on his claim to the title of greatest DOA5 vanilla player ever.

His run in 5 Ultimate has been almost as impressive. He came in second at TFC, an event that was, again, dominated by a character that received significant nerfs in the wake of the tournament (a character he did at a point resort to using himself…with less than gold standard results.). However he did have to go through Rikuto, CrazySteady, Master and Sweet Revenge to get to Lopedo – the same Lopedo whom he gave a serious run for his money in the finals. More recently he dropped a final set to Sweet Revenge at NEC14 but, if at the end of the December, your mantle has two silver medals and a gold you had a hell of a year….

right?

Rikuto

Sometimes it’s not about what you win but how you play.

How good is Rikuto? Looking at his placing at the majors doesn’t tell the story properly. To understand why he’s on this list is to understand what the names mentioned before him all have in common. Everyone on this list is great but only one of them is playing with a less than great character.

In circumstances where everyone else is playing to win, he seems to be playing to prove a point - that point being that he’s better than you. Rikuto is knowledgeable enough and has the reaction speed to compete with the best this country has to offer and yet he handicaps himself by sticking to the character that has become synonymous with his name; one who’s abilities pale in comparison to many on the roster – Bayman. It doesn’t hurt either that he can back it up and he’s done it with consistent results. With Leon being reintroduced to the cast, it’s up to him to own 2014.

2013 is your call.
