The Road to DOA6

Hey there. I've been playing DOA5 pretty much daily since getting it a few months ago, mostly against the AI but this is starting to get boring. Ranked is a waiting simulator for most of the time, even when searching for players way above my rank and lobbies can be hit or miss, a lot of times i either can't join, people leave, i get kicked or the other person just does nothing lol. I've already played some FSD dudes which i'm thankful for and enjoyed, but ya can never have enough people to play against :p

On the one hand i'd like some help, critique on my playstyle and tips on how i can improve, maybe get a bit better against some match ups i have problems with (like Jann Lee and Tina for example) and perhaps see what character(s) fit me, because i keep questioning my choice a lot lol. Basically just some training to get better. DOA is honestly the first game where i would even think about competing and going to tournaments at some point, simply because i enjoy it so much. Obviously, i'm nowhere near a level where i could even take a round, but hey, maybe i'll get there some day.

On the other hand, fuck man, i just want to play this game. So if you don't have anything to say, teach or whatever and just want to play this game then i'd love to join you for some matches.

I think it's fair to say i'm not a complete beginner anymore and know at least the basic stuff. And yes, i know that with DOA6 i'll have to re-learn things, but by playing now i will at least have a decent foundation for that game.

This is mostly about spending the time leading up to 6's release "well", i don't play any other games anyway (well maybe for an hour or so of something until i go back to DOA) sooo... yea. Game still feels new and fresh to me.

So if anyone wants to play some matches just add me on PSN, my ID is on my profile. Thanks!

We've already added each other but I'm pretty much fully warmed up now with Lisa and always ready to throw down when I'm available. If you hit me up and I don't respond or link up with you it's generally because I have IRL company over or I'm already in an active lobby and carrying on over mic. Any time you see me on and I'm doing anything other than YouTube ((Probably napping)) always feel free to reach out. I may not be up to competitive standards but I'm a nice dude and growing as a player. You're more than welcome to siphon what you can from sparring with me.

When it comes to choosing your main you just pick the character you like the most and feel comfortable with.

That's what i usually do but in Lisas case i just feel like the way i play doesn't work very well with her. Maybe i just need to work on it, but that might take some time :p
I'll never play a character i dislike even if i could destroy everyone with 'em. A main just needs to work on every level for me. I'm pretty picky about it.

Lisa is the type of character that really good at zoning the opponent and punishing them. She’s a grappler, her neutral throw has 1 less frame so she can punish even more moves than majority of the cast.

From what I can remember about your Lisa she's annoyingly similar to mine but a bit more aggressive. If you're encountering trouble with winning matches it's probably a lot to do with your fundamentals (Which I'm working on atm as well while learning Ayane). Stuff like learning when you can and can't punish against the character you're fighting (And what to punish with.), what moves leave Lisa unsafe (There's a lot lol), what your best options are for whiff punishing or poking into stun (Depending on the situation/character), and when to utilize her shenanigans. This is stuff you're going to have to pick up with any character you decide to play. That and learning to slow escape and when it isn't an option (I've been working on using it more and have found it immensely beneficial).

Regardless of who you switch to until you're fundamentally sound (Like I said I'm still working on that part) you're going to hit the same wall in progress because there's only so far you can get with just trying to crush/poke your way in through the cast without knowing exactly how/when to do it or if you even should. I got checked down out of the B ranks by losing to someone in the D's that was playing with absolutely no fundamentals at all and it made me introspect because if I was a better player it wouldn't have happened even if I was just messing around.

What platforms are you all getting DOA6 on, just I know which one to buy first. PS4 or PC??

I'm more geared towards PS4 bc I need a use for it and I know most of the playerbase is there, but...... What y'all doing? xD

I'll get it on Ps4 because that's where most of the people i'm gonna play with are. Also, Share Play to make friends that arent into fighters play with me. Hopefully. Might not work this time since tag is out.

I'm getting it on PS4 and PC. To support the game and because I want to play with people on Playstation but also want to enjoy the game's graphic fidelity on my rig as well.

I was thinking about getting an Xbox One X for DOA6. I want it to look the best possible on console, gaming on PC is not my thing.
I guess I'll wait a while longer to learn what improvements there are on Pro and X and then I decide.

I think I'll just get it on both PS4 and PC.. Just in case a T7 scenario (definitely not) occurs and everyone for some reason moves to PC for online play and less input delay.

Imagine if Xbox One X had the superior version when it boils down to gameplay issues tho. I'll be finished out here.

I will be playing the game on PS4 and Xbox one. But I'm quite surprise about a lot of players playing on PC now. It has got me thinking whether or not I should buy a gaming laptop to play DOA6 and other games on it.

Rather than a laptop you'd be better off building a PC. Better value for your money. Unless you REALLY need it to be portable... I'd love to see more PC players in DOA6 btw

Yeah, PC would be a better choice to get and I don't really need it to be portable. But the challenging part will be finding someone who can build a PC lool

You can. It really is a super simple process. The hardest parts are cable management and not shitting your pants when you clamp the processor down into it's home in the MOBO.

Yeah, I can imagine the process being very complicated and figuring out where each of the wires go into. Hopefully, someone who has builds a pc on a regular basis will have a good knowledge on what to do with the wiring and stuffs like that.

No shame here: I'm at D+ right now, and yes I've lost matches against LRs that have me banging my head against the wall. Consequently, I still lick my chops when I see LRs (and I'm sure S+ and beyond do the same in kind for me xD).

I agree with the feverish focus on fundamentals, you need a solid foundation for the house to stand, if that makes sense. If you take care of those, and do your homework on the more advanced material, the rest will come together in time. There are still finer details that escape me, but with time and effort, I'll pick those up too.

Speaking of slow escapes, I'm kicking the Hold habit (as well as another bad habit, the wakeup habit...too many players know how to punish this...I felt so dumb). This little change has already resulted in positive progress, namely rounds where I take away more of the opponent's health, closer fights, or outright wins. I'll throw it if I recognize the attack, but more often than not, electing to escape is always the best move. Fully agree with you there. :)

As to knowing what moves you can and cannot punish, we can talk about the numbers all day long (and believe me, I pour over frame data because it helps me structure my gameplan) but getting an intuitive feel for the timing of the moves is helping as well. For example, I had an Ayane player spam 236K and for whatever reason, I was slow to adapt at first (yeah...I know ) and over the course of our session, I adapted to the timing of the movement and the punishment became automatic. I hope to let this small example serve as an indication of the greater whole. Still, I'll keep practicing against the moves as I should.

As I stated in my profile, my neutral game is trash and as a result, I'm playing defensively and waiting. I can't poke or bait (on purpose) to save my life, got the yips. Definitely something I'll be working to improve. As a result, I'm gunshy and play too defensively.

I can get away with this with less knowledgeable opponents, however, a more knowledgeable player will recognize this and (I wish I were kidding) calmly walk up to me with their character's slow walk animation, stun me and start their long sequence of unrelenting advantage and the damage therein.

Anyway, this a part of how I see it thus far, hopefully I'm not completely inaccurate. I hope to replicate what little success I've attained on a higher level one day. A lot to learn and a long way to go.

I didn't intend for this post to turn into a progress report, but ah well.
