Ryu of the Street Fighter series is undoubtably one of the most famous and recognizable characters in video gaming. We've seen him in a lot of different styles and in a lot of different games. Today I wanted to especially focus on the 3D versions of his character in a selection of games:
Ryu in
Street Fighter IV:
Alternate costumes:
A pretty painterly style, even impressionist regarding the strong strokes of his skin textures. Ryu seems very bulky, crude and even caveman-ish. Imho a very unappealing depiction of him.
Ryu in
Street Fighter x Tekken:
Very similar to the art style of SF4. Still painterly but with a lot more contrast, thus appearing more comic-like. The base character model seems the exact same as in SF4 but it appears even cruder because of the stark contrast.
Ryu in
Marvel vs Capcom 3:
Very comic-like in look with thick, black outlines, cel-shading and less overall detailing. His facial- and body features are a lot less crude and bulky than in SF4. He also looks a lot less angry.
Ryu in
Smash Bros WiiU:
Stilistically toned down a lot to match the smooth and family friendly Smash Bros aesthetic. His facial- and body features seem a lot more appealing.
Ryu in
Street Fighter 5:
Alternate costumes:
A stylistic mixture of Street Fighter 4 and Smash Bros. Still kinda painterly but also pretty soft and smooth... The bulkyness returned but because of the less stark contrasts and softer, more detailed facial features and body features Ryu looks a lot more appealing than his SF4 counterpart.
Last but not least here's a glimpse of what Ryu migth look like in the upcoming
Tekken x Street Fighter:
Ryu is depicted in the typical Tekken Tag Tournament 2/Tekken 7 style. It goes with a lot more detailed and realistic art direction. In my opinion this is Ryu's most appealing 3D depiction yet and I can't wait to see him in action in this game.
I do understand though why Capcom appears more in favor with the more exaggerated, comic-like depictions of Ryu. They feel a lot closer to the original 2D sprites. Capcom probably wants to honor this tradition.
What do you guys think?
