DOA6's story was all about the adventures of Marie Rose and Honoka, until Raidou's resurrection via cyborg to get Kasumi and the ninjas into the action. A bit of a lackluster.

Now, despite the obvious shonen tropes to bring in some shout outs from DBZ, Naruto and Saint Seiya (looking at Angel Jin's design), Tekken 8's story was better than 7's attempt. And 7 was so damn silly because of the sudden usage of a reporter as the narrator. Next, we had Akuma of ALL people is part of Tekken's canon so to say Capcom's Street Fighter is included. If that's the case, where's Ryu? Does M. Bison and Shadaloo exist? What about Chun-Li, Ken, Cammy, etc.? Then we get to Kazuya and Heihachi's final battle when it tried to become DBZ and Heihachi was like hard as steel/diamond/unbreakable so he won't die. Not to mention the bonus fight with Akuma as Devil Kazuya.

8's story was not perfect though. There were some that was very weird to make you wanna say WTF?. Best examples were Marshall Law suddenly act like the bad guy for Paul during the war and parts of Nina's characterization. Not to mention for fans of Asuka, she was hardly involved, only for Lili brought forth the Kazama family tree to the point that Asuka doesn't know about Jun at all and also looking buddy-buddy with Jin.

Reina's inclusion was obvious from the start because of the leaks a year ago, so it wasn't nearly as a shocker to me as her being Heihachi's daughter and wants/has the Devil Gene. Though Azarel returning did because I thought the team did not like him as the boss, besides Jin trying to become Kazuya 2.0 in 6.

The good parts: Jin is back as a good protagonist and the ship of him and Xiaoyu is going to be canon.

Now that I got Story Mode and Arcade Quest out of the way, I can focus on what I bought this for: online multiplayer.

I'm having a lot of fun with this game. It feels like a faster Tekken 7.5. I am liking the intense pressure you can put on someone with Heat. The momentum you can build with Reina is satisfying as hell. Sick character, got cancels and stances for days. The Heihachi moveset and the Taido makes for a really dope hybrid.

I absolutely love the stages though, they look gorgeous and just the variety is awesome. Solid background music. No infinite stages FTW too, never was a big fan of those. There isn't a bad stage in the game.

Tekken 8 stages are DOA Danger Zones done right. Oh you got launched from the ground or wall? Ok that's like a one time thing. You don't have to worry about fucking firecrackers or explosive barrels everywhere like in DOA6.

I think Lili's new Dew Glide 3 is my favorite addition for her, I didn't think I'd be using it much but after watching a combo video, it's utility is definitely a God send xD

Also for anyone interested, a custom UE for Tekken 8 had been made so mods are gonna be possible. I'm so ready to mod Lili so I can give her some new hair and costumes xD

So if you're on PC and you go to "Graphics Settings", and then scroll down to "Upscaling" you have a lot of options to choose from. The problem is there is no option to turn it off and run the game at its native resolution.

What the upscaling does in Tekken 8 (and other games) is that internally it is rendering the game at a low resolution and then it upscales it to a higher resolution. So for example, the game could be rendering at a resolution of 540p and then uses an upscaler like Nvidia DLSS or AMD FSR to output that image at 4K or 1080p (whatever resolution you have set in the settings). These upscalers are essentially programs that are "guessing" on how to make that lower resolution look the same at a higher resolution.

The benefit of this is that it is far less demanding. This is probably why its forced on in Tekken 8 to allow lower spec PCs to render the game without having an impact on the netcode. (DOA6, conversely, lowers the resolution on the fly in online matches if it determines your PC cannot render it at your setting to try to ensure a smoother online experience for both players)

The downside is certain upscaling methods can give you visual artifacts like awful hair dithering. Usually, upscalers are better used in fast motion applications because upscalers are "blurring" the image in a way to get a higher resolution output. You won't notice it as much there especially with the use of motion blur. But if you are looking at static images with motion blur turned off, you can see some ugly artifacting.

You can test this yourself in the game and you should immediately notice a difference in how hair looks.

I want the option to turn off upscaling because I have a beefy enough PC to render the game at 4K@60FPS natively (that is assuming there isn't some gross unoptimization elsewhere in the game)

This video also covers the variety of upscaling options in Tekken 8 and worth checking out. It is recommended by this video to use TSR as that is Unreal Engine's own upscaling method. I've time-stamped it where they recommend TSR, but feel free to rewind and see how the other upscalers look.

@KasumiLover I think this is really important in your case because I know you had a lot of hair mods in DOA6 and I assume the hair looking good is something you care a lot about.

Take a look at these comparison pictures I made in SF6 for an example.

Poor upscaling (Not just the hair but also the dithering on her sheer top):

Improved upscaling after I changed a setting in the config.ini file for the game. (There doesn't seem to be a way to turn off upscaling completely)

Actually, I wonder if the Chun-Li character model in the first screenshot is even being upscaled, it looks like its rendered at the game's internal low resolution.

@grap3fruitman Sorry about that, I thought I included links.

There's two mods. The screenshot I posted is from the second link below:

Nice find on the internal resolution, makes sense its running at 720p.

Lol so turns out this game can't run at 60FPS @4K with rendering quality set to 200%

My RTX4090 is brought to its knees with 99% utlization at 30FPS.

Makes sense now they want to render the engine at a lower rez and upscale it.

My favorite customs I made so far:

Lili with short hair, a jacket, stockings, and short heel boots and glasses is so cute xD

Honoka custom I made. Hopefully we'll get better items so I can improve it but so far the starter gear I can work with

I want to know why there are so many DOA assets in Tekken 8 and how if KT was so mad at Shimbori that this would be tolerated when they sue over pillows.

Is there some type of law that permits this or does Koei Tecmo themselves not own some of these assets such as Tina pose, the explosion from environmental damage, and Ayane’s school girl outfit.

I could see a crossover coming. The writing is on the wall.
