- “Let me say one thing. It is much more difficult to implement a series character than it is to create an original character.”
- For example, Leifang has a loved one in Jann Lee, so it’s tougher to write her story. Meanwhile, original characters come into Dead or Alive Xtreme: Venus Vacation with a blank slate.
- “I feel that it is necessary to have stories that deepen their relationships with the owner.”
I think the DOAXVV girl storylines are rather poor, event stories have some charm to them but the bar isn't high. Gachas like Blue Archive or Nikke are delivering both with a constant stream of sexy characters and super compelling stories so competition is fierce. If TN is going to shelve the fighting game franchise, at least put actual effort and resources in this VV spinoff.
That's what doesn't make any sense about his statements. I literally COULD find ways to write their characters in a way that respects their lore yet still allows for an actual deepening of relationships with the Owner. In fact, if anything, the other cut girls are easy compared to Leifang precisely BECAUSE they don't have any known significant others (unless you count Ryu Hayabusa in the case of Rachel). Tina literally managed to work with the Owner and viewed him as an equal compared to how her dad tried to make her more like him. You could have Rachel coming over to try and train for the Venus Festival due to hearing about it necessitating strength and beauty, and being like both Momiji and Hitomi is initially unsure if she can pull it off, and hint her fiend heritage is what's causing her to be hesitant. Maybe have her bond with the Owner partly because he doesn't seem to have an issue with her fiend heritage as well (sort of like Shizuku). Mila, basically similar motives towards Hitomi, and maybe have her also have a bit of an initial tsundere reaction to the Owner due to the owner mistaking her more tomboy nature with her being a lesbian. As far as Christie, maybe go a similar route with Helena and Ayane and have her investigate the island due to thinking it was the center of a conspiracy, only in her case, she's been charged by a client (may or may not be Donovan) with assassinating the Owner, but she decides to gauge him a bit before she decides whether or not to kill him, maybe have her fall in love with her target instead (you know, similar to Mara Jade). And as far as Lisa and NiCO, maybe have them go over to the island due to scientific potential or something like that, and they find the owner and decide to work with him as a way to do funding for their respective research. In the case of NiCO, maybe have her bond with the Owner as a way to get over the loss of her parents as well, acting as a bit of a continuity nod towards the ending of DOA6. And since Lisa technically had the Misaki role before Misaki herself was created, maybe have Lisa also try to work directly alongside the Owner to find ways to advance scientific progress, and even have her work bond grow as a result.
Heck, having canonical significant others wasn't even a problem in the case of Hitomi and arguably Momiji (the former with Hayate, and the latter arguably with Ryu Hayabusa), and they were in the game by default. Heck, even Helena, if Xtreme 3's ending is to be believed, was at least aware Zack may have had feelings for her (whether she herself was mutual on it, though, is left ambiguous). If they could pull it off, so could the cut girls.
Why is it that we fans who don't nearly have the amount of resources for the games as the developers can actually come up with a way to deepen the bond with the owner yet the actual guys making the games can't?
