IPL and Dead or Alive

Does anyone know the status of Dead or Alive in IPL's new fighter division? It seems that IGN has been pushing the DoA5 wiki pretty hard lately, with character spotlights being highlighted on the front page. In an interview, Dr.Dogg mentioned that DoA is a fun game to watch, even if you don't know what's going on, creating a wider appeal to many non-FGC gamers and that IGN has the resources to lure these non-FGC gamers into watching IPL streams of the game. I can only assume the front page spotlights are an attempt to build hype among the non-FGC gaming community around the game to benefit official IPL DoA events in a way that Dr.Dogg described.

This is all well and good. However, I'm a bit concerned. After doing a little research, I'm not able to find any articles that clearly states that Dead or Alive 5 has officially been picked up by IPL for their pro-circuit. The most I can find, in regards to IPL and Dead or Alive, are the basic marketing events that IGN held in anticipation for the game. Now that the game is out, I'm a little a bit more than curious to know what IGN plans on doing with the game. Will it be inducted as IPL's first fight game? Is the wiki-experiment going to fail and the game forgotten about? Or is the game going to be spotlighted in a tournament or two and quickly lost in long list of other (some say superior: I say that questionable) fight games?

No official announcements have been made concerning the main IPL tournament series and DOA (or any fighting games for that matter). If there's ever an official announcement about IPL and DOA, you can rest assured myself or Sorwah will have a post here detailing it.

For the time being, sit back and enjoy DOA5 and make an effort to travel to the already announced tournaments. If you don't support the game outside of IPL, then you can't expect it to do great things at community-run events and even Evo. It's up to the community to get this game top level support.

Thanks for the official answer, Dr.Dogg. I don't know if it was a lapse of vigilance or if I was being plain ol' stupid but, before looking into it, I took it for granted that DoA had been picked up. It's a little disheartening to hear otherwise but I'm still excited to see what the IPL has up their sleeves for the FGC.

What do you guys ("guys" meaning the people who haven't commented yet) think? Do we really need IPL to pick up Dead or Alive 5, or can the community prosper without IGN's (longterm) help? I dream of a day when I can sit down in room full of fight game players, bust out a copy of DoA5 and not get laughed out the door. Where do you guys see the community 2, 6... 12 months from now? What are the biggest technical hurdles the game will have to over come to garner the respect from the FGC? I know these are all hypotheticals, fantasy and conjecture but I want to see a conversation about the future. As the game stands, where do we go from here?

That all being asked, (I hope we get at least a little bit of discussion/debate going) I'm trying my hardest to rep the game but it's pretty tough in a small town with a very close knit, passionate community who all LOVE their 2D fighters. It's also hard to attend any tournaments since I live at least $200-300 away from any city bigger than my own. I am, however, planning on doing a money match with one of our top, local, AE players, who currently knows nothing about the game, in hopes of building at least a modest amount of hype/interest. We'll see where it goes from there.

So, I guess boiling my random thoughts down into a coherent (I use the word lightly) thought would sound like this, "Where do you guys see this game's community going? Is it doomed like the FGC 'at large' tells us it is or do we still have a fighting chance at making this game stay? Have you guys been representing our game by showing up to or throwing tournaments? If not, what have you been doing to try to help the community?" Thanks for the input, everyone!

I'm just asking a lot of questions and trying to get a lot of input from other people and, while Dr.Dogg's two cents were helpful, not everyone has a local DoA community to support or the financial resources required to attend out-of-city tournaments.

Education and support.

New players have to be educated so that they are confident enough to come out to tournaments.

Players that don't need to be educated must show up to tournaments and support their game.

After that, it's just playing it in front of people. This looks like a good game when it's played right. The merit of the game and word-of-mouth should take it from there.

I implore anyone that has the power to do their best to contribute informational resources. I was too late with SCV but there still may be hope for you.

There are people who are interested in this game, but they will never show their faces if they are not strong enough.

That's my theory, anyway.

DOA5 is, by its design, a legitimate tournament-worthy fighter. Biased opinion is biased, but for this to have any showing in EVO, IPL, MLG or what have you, the community needs to treat it like its a tournament-worthy fighter.

This means:

1. Going to national tournaments
2. Going to local gatherings/tournaments. If it doesn't exist, make one.
3. Create content for the game -- whether its through posts, videos, etc.

The goal is people, tournament organizers and sponsors see that DOA5, no pun intended, is a fighter and there is a community to back it up.

Made a community at our school, I just brought my PS3 to my school's anime club every Thursday we started with like 3 people and now its about 40+. So now instead of just my setup Thursdays, there's like 3-5 setup brought by other people and on Fridays we're on another campus doing casual tournaments.

I can easily fill number 3 with plenty of videos on my channel (online matches, some tips like how to get certain titles easily, story cutscenes), number 1 seems really hard for me. Number 2, I'll probably find a local community near paris, but if not, how would you make one?

If your in college or school, just bring a setup to a student center or public location and play with your friends. Sooner or later your going to get some sort of crowd that's interested in fighting games or a general topic and then create something after that.

This is how it's done, people.

Oh, and see if you can't drag some of them along to NEC. It's right in the neighborhood.
