Remember when I said a character is worse than La Mariposa...?
I understand that some characters' movesets (i.e. Busa ._.) enable them with a wider variety of options, but I don't yet grasp why TN would make a character deliberately "low tier," or less playable. DrDogg, you wrote the guide to 4 -- can you (or anyone, really) explain this idea to me? In a perfect game, shouldn't the characters have even tools all across the board, so that winning is up to individual skill? A character's nuances should just compliment your play style, rather than give an unfair handicap...right? Or is there a purpose for the higher tier/lower tier?

Genuinely curious here -- thanks. =)

In a perfect world, all characters have relatively equal tools and player skill is the determining factor. While player skill always plays a role, in a game like DOA5, the tools of each character are far from equal.

Take Bass vs. La Mariposa for example...

Bass has a ton of frame advantage and safe attacks. He can KO an opponent while remaining relatively safe and rarely taking any risks. If you get caught by one catch throw, 40% of your life is gone and Bass gets a reset into a 50/50 to take another 40%. He's slow, but the side step and crush system help him go head to head with the faster characters.

La Mariposa has almost no safe attacks and only a handful of attacks that give her advantage. She is forced to rely on mix-ups and the stun game, but almost every chance she has to mix-up an opponent, the opponent can side step or interrupt every option (or at least all of the damaging options). Mariposa is the one forced to guess and if she guesses wrong she's eating damage. Even if she guesses right, unless it's a hi counter throw, she isn't much of a threat.

Pretty much any character who has to play the stun game to win is going to have an uphill battle against the top tier and VF characters. Right now the VF characters are in a tier of their own because they have most of their VF5 frame data... which means someone like Akira gets an unholdable combo if you block a 13-frame attack.

Well then I guess you have a couple of options:
1. suck it up and play who you want regardless of rank, 'cause you're good.
2. don't play them
3. be scared you might get beat by them like a little bitch or
4. prepare to drink the tears of those foolish enough to oppose you!

Yeah ok buddy tell me how your gun fight goes with a butter knife.

It's not about "rank" it's about a character being able to utilize the system to its fullest potential. A character with more depth that actually rewards to player for learning them is fun.

That is mad unfortunate for Lisa players. Do you think Team Ninja does not realize how bad they have made her in comparison to some of the other characters? What do you figure they think her advantages are? I doubt they tried to make her weak.

I personally hope that this game is not dominated by VF characters. This is a Dead or Alive game after all.

I wanna fuck the yellow ranger, but she's probably a lil too old now lol.

Hate to rain on everyone's childhood (and continue derailing this topic). But you do realize that she only played the girl outside of the suit right? The original Japanese show for which all the battles and zords were of had the Yellow Ranger as a man right? The only female member was the pink ranger. It's why she was the only one in a skirt.

That's right, sometimes you might get a face full of man junk from the yellow ranger in those skin tight outfits >_>. All because obviously they couldn't reshoot the battle scenes and would just shoot the storyline at the juicebar (which was originally a bowling alley in the pilot).

You know, I'm kinda saddened I know these things considering I didn't watch the show past the White Ranger. However, I had a co-worker of mine who is still into these shows from Japan. I'm sure I picked this up from him...

If I had to guess I'd say that Team Ninja balances the characters based on how they feel the character should be played. Some characters they deem mix-up characters and balance them with the assumption that you'll rarely finish a string and you'll get most of your damage from the stun system. Unfortunately, this strategy doesn't work against anyone with good defense, so these characters end up being low tier in high level play.

As of the IPL build, the VF characters will most definitely dominate. You don't even know how frustrating it is to have your back to the wall against Akira... especially if you're using a character who doesn't have a 9 or 10 frame jab. Akira can stay at advantage all day long, and if you block high, you're eating a full combo. If you crouch, you're eating a full combo from an attack that leaves Akira at 0 on block. It's not fun...

That said, I'd MUCH rather see the DOA characters buffed, rather than nerf the VF characters and alienate any people wanting to make the transition from VF to DOA.

That makes sense is regards to La Maraposa. Still unfortunate she don't have great tools for competitive play. What do you think they could do to make her more viable while keeping her mix up style?

I too would like to see everyone as good as Akira and Sarah. They look excellent, would just be weird Virtua Fighters so dominant in use, if they end up being used a lot that is. There is just something about bringing over guest characters and having them be the best that don't jive with me. I bet i'm just being petty and will get used to it. May even enjoy playing them myself, which is what matters.

So Trini had a little wheenie after all.

I agree with you, I'd MUCH rather have the DOA characters buffed than have the VF characters be nerfed. It kinda bothers me, that the DOA characters aren't as good as the VF characters in a DOA game. Are none of the DOA characters as powerful as the VF characters?

I have nothing against them, I love their original games but I think it's gonna be really lame if the entire DOA5 scene is dominated by Akira and Sarah (and Pai).

Yeah, I get what you mean. Snake is crazy good in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Freddy Krueger is amazing in Mortal Kombat. Even SPARTAN-458 was one of the best characters in DOA4, though she was very rarely used.

It doesn't really bother me (I main Freddy in MK9 myself), but I can totally understand why anyone would hate it.

All I'll say is the game isn't out yet so don't be so quick to Judge. I'll honestly be happy if Akira or even Sarah are some of the best characters in DOA5, though I'm a little biased as I'm a former VF player and mained Akira.

Even if they end up top tier I doubt those two will be at the VERY top. I'll be a monkey's uncle if they end up as the literal #1 and #2 of the game.

Seriously the VF character are going to be OP if DOA characters remain the same.

Akria > Pai >Sarah if we go by VF5.

Shut up about OP andd tiers before the game comes out, and Akiras guard frame is Sidesteppable... in VF, if you just block vs Akira, you get raped, if TN was to stay true to the character traits from VF, he needs to stay the same.

Akira would be completly broken if the Sidestep system was like it was in doa4, but its NOT, so sidestep against him and dont call him OP or broken before you learn your shit.

I can already see it coming... week 1 nerf to Akira because 10000000000 scrubs get raped by his guard break online and instead of going to training mode and learning to beat it and learning to sidestep it, they think the solution is crying like little bitches for it to get nerfed. Then TN starts shitting bricks, and they nerf it, just like they did with the hold recovery, just like they did with CB... TN shitting bricks all over the place and nerfing stuff so scrubs feel happy.
