Battle Royal Final Round 18 only receives 42 pre-registrants for DOA5LR

In a year that brings Team NINJA's exciting and new tournament circuit, Battle Royal 2015, the pressure is certainly on the community to match up to the support the team has provided for it. Winter Brawl 9 (WB9) concluded a few weeks ago in Philadelphia, PA with 32 entrants - an improvement over Winter Brawl 8's numbers by 50%. However, many were disappointed in the turnout at WB9 regardless of the fact the game was released in the same week.

Larry "Shin Blanka" Dixon, organizer for Final Round 18, recently posted the pre-registration numbers on his facebook:

Code:
Thanks to everyone that pre registered online for fr18! Remember there still is Emergency Door Registration on Thursday and Friday. Sad to see kof and the injustice numbers so low, but it is what it is. LoL. See everyone in two weeks!

Ultra Street Fighter 4 = 343
UMVC3 = 189
GG Xrd = 186
TTT2 = 139
Smash U = 122
Under Night= 69
KI = 55
Smash Melee= 50
DOA =42
Soul Cal= 42
Injustice = 24
Kof = 16

Previous Final Rounds scored as high as a 68 entrant tournament, so the pre-registration numbers certainly aren't too far from that mark. However, with this year being the debut of Battle Royal 2015, and the final entry of Dead or Alive 5 now released, the eyes are on the DOA community to support its own game and the competitors who are trying to keep the game alive in the competitive circuit. Sadly, even if the numbers are equal to previous years, one would hope with the increased support from Team NINJA in investing in a tournament circuit, that competitive entrant numbers would be improving. If numbers aren't improving at events then support from Team NINJA probably won't be continuing in the future... including future iterations of the series. Could the low pre-registrant numbers for DOA5 Last Round at Final Round 18 be a sign of this being the last year for competitive Dead or Alive?

Final Round 18 takes place in Atlanta, GA on March 20, 2015. For those players who want to support those in attendance, but are unable to attend themselves, an FSD donation pool has been set up to give towards the total Pot bonus.

Nope, here's where i feel you are wrong. Offline matches are normally for people who want to get better at the game they're showing up for and compete at high levels in the process.

Hell, i went to KiT for GG and got bopped really badly, but i went because i wanted to improve and i got to meet a high-level player who kicked my ass (Black Snake) lol
idk about you but I never wanted to pay to "git gud." I went to FR and TFC in the past, but only because I could drive there and back easily. Also that last part about Black Snake sounded like a porno the first time I read it LOL.

you must not play Guilty Gear then i assume.

Can we at least agree that even though the numbers are small, that numbers have generally improved overall? I remember 42 people would be considered quite a big tournament for DOA in the DOA4 days where EVO in 2006 had about 60 something people or slightly more (I forget). Most tournaments back then never got to 40, and I'm sure some peeps showed up late or joined in after the fact.

Naw i'm not going, the main reason is I won't be available but I still don't think I would go since it def isn't worth the money for me. I went to TFC just cuz it was an our away, didn't play tho cuz if I wanted to get bodied for money i'd hire an escort.
An escort isn't the way to go, I assure you. What you need, my good man, is a good ol' fashioned pro-domme, and one that knows how to do the job right.

*ahem* That being said, if I had known you were going, you could've settled for spectating and we could've hung out for casuals and food and stuff.

Yea commentators are Important but They need a good knowledge over the game to explain and they also need to be funny between the Matches. Like a real good entertainer. This is the Most difficult thing to do. Because if someone Act to professionell he becomes boring. And if he just funny he looks stupid. And These people need to know when they have Build up the hype in a exciting Match for the viewer.

I'm dedicated to the game, but I seriously find no interest in travelling long distances to minor events or any event with the matter of just trying to show support while playing competitively

These aren't minor events. It's just that people who don't go don't have a full appreciation for the impact of the events. Watching on stream or whatever doesn't exactly capture the experience or "feel".

This. Since I am back in good with my university's FGC and they hold tournaments, I definitely love being around people who are passionate about the genre and the games they play. It's comforting knowing that there are other people out there who do spend time in training, practicing, and honing their craft.

But at the end of the day this is a Major tekken tournament with some games that are more popular than tekken and DOA.

When a game is on the small side like this, the best thing for it is word of mouth. I've got a lot of my friends into DoA now (6 other guys) and if things stay interesting I might even try to grow things with stuff like casuals. Then other people can tell their friends to play and so on (and we'll pretend that ban stuff in the news never happened).Right now though I can't justify going from Cali to GA. It'll be fun once I get to that point though.

Some people are bothered by the feel and maybe people in general. A lot of people don't want to go because of things like anxiety disorders an the like.

The thing is it's not that easy convincing people to play the game. I've gotten people into the game as well as others mentioned in previous post. I mean it's great to actually get people into the game, but you also can't force them to play what they don't want to play lol. Just like you can't force people to travel (even the ones who bark, but won't bite).

Still, not to take away from the thread, hope to see some of you next weekend. I'll be there. Should be fun.

The problem for me (and I'm sure quite a lot of others) is I don't want to travel long distances, spending time and money, to show my support for the game since that "seems" to be the reason with all of the influence on getting people to show up. I would like to go to an offline event and have fun with people who also enjoy the game, but it really isn't a big enough factor to get me to bother. There are a lot of problems with this community it seems, but I know a good amount would agree with my opinion. At this point, if it isn't a local event, it's either go big or stay home

This post doesn't really make much sense. What do you mean by "go big or stay home"? Do you mean with regards to you or the community? It's ok to not go to an event if it's either inconvenient or not really viable at the time, but if people wait for an event to be "ZOMG BIG!!!", then no one will really show up because they're waiting for other people to "show up" to make the event seem big.

'Go big or go home' means go all out, not necessarily community size. I cannot afford to go to every accessible major, so I choose which ones to attend. If I'm going to spend the money at all, I'll choose the largest one possible which in recent years has been TFC, but if I add to that list it will be those with the largest reputed events to support the franchise.
