EVO 2015 Lineup

And not to dwell on this but what stopped them from adding DOA 5 to EVO 2013? The game was only out for several months before they decided which games to include for EVO and a lot of people actually bought the game and it had above-average reviews from almost all gaming sites.

Since I'm new here, I got to know: what does he mean with a 8k tournament where people didn't show up? Did that really happen? When was that?
The Fall Classic.

Doesn't matter anyways. If we had gotten 3,000 attendees his complaint would be, "You can only get a high number of entrants if there's a huge $8,000 prize on the line." Keep in mind that Evo 2014's Blazblue tournament got just over 500 entrants and that was with a prize of $30,000. Yes, Thirty Thousand.

They just released an article on his reasons for the various games. If you look at the examples he gives for reasoning, he appears to contradict himself to what helps qualify a game:

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 feels as if it’s fallen off a bit since Evo 2014. Was there any discussion about cutting it to make room or was it always considered a lock?

Mr. Wizard: It was always considered a lock. Last year Marvel has the highest viewership at Evo, and it was super exciting top eight.

What is it about [Xrd and Persona 4] that caused you to break the tradition [or more than one anime game]?

Mr. Wizard: ... BlazBlue had a version update that not to many players were fond of, and *we rarely put a title in Evo based on the previous year’s top eight.*

Killer Instinct is an interesting title in that it’s seeing frequent updating in the form of new characters, balance patches, etc. Would it have returned to Evo if that wasn’t the case?

Mr. Wizard: No, it would not be in Evo if the game wasn’t updated with fresh content. Keeping players coming back for updates and new characters is what every game needs, and it definitely contributed to Killer Instinct coming back a second year.

Super Smash Bros. Melee continues to enjoy an incredible resurgence, thanks in part to its inclusion at Evo 2014. Do you think it has the ability to pull off a feat like Marvel vs. Capcom 2’s nine straight appearances before throwing in the towel?

Mr. Wizard: It very well could. You have to remember this game is 15 years old, and it’s getting record numbers.

At this point in time, Tekken 7’s launch in March is confined to Japan. Do you expect other regions to have good showings if this remains the same or can we look forward to an all-Japan top eight?

Mr. Wizard: A lot of these are the stronger players, and will have no problem picking up Tekken 7 fast, and I think the United States will have several players that place high at Evo.

Evo 2015 is shaping up to be one of the most inclusive installments the tournament series has ever seen in terms of community representation. Any advice for folks out there who feel they’ve been left out in the cold that would help their game’s chances of making Evo 2016?

Mr. Wizard: The easiest way is to show up to tournaments year round. Just because you have a big side tournament at Evo, don’t expect a free pass into Evo next year. Players need to be excited and playing the game year round for consideration into Evo. Keeping up with your local scene and supporting it there will go a long way into showing support for your favorite game.

Which is it? A game having a successful Top 8 can lock-in a game (Marvel) but also keep-out a game (Blazblu). Staying updated can lock in a game (KI / USF4), but staying outdated can lock in a game (Melee / Marvel). Getting a lock can happen if it's believed that some top players will adjust fast (T7). Side Tournaments don't mean anything (DoA / SG), it's the number of entrants throughout the year (MKX / T7 / SFxT). It's ok though for T7. It's on superguns so the players who haven't played it can play it with a controller so they can still play it for the first time with their controller of choice.

I REALLY hope Team Ninja doesn't pay these sanctimonious, pompous ass-hats money for a spot in evo. Especially when people talk shit about the game nonstop from their camp.

Mr. Wizard is leading me towards cannibalization of my knuckles in place of speaking how I actually feel right now.

Speak your mind big dawg speak your mind.

Were I not a big dawg, I would speak it much more easily. Alas I actually think my opinion on the current situation would be damaging as hell if made public.

It's instead being made privately and to the right people, so I can ascertain whether or not I'm going to pop off.

But it wouldn't take a genius right now to figure out that, yes, I am somewhat losing my temper.

For those thinking that we just haven't been showing support to our grassroots in numbers, Rikuto pulled up the following entrant counts. Doesn't matter to Mr.Wizard since apparently we aren't consistent all over the country or wherever it is that we aren't out numbering the games he doesn't want us to outnumber.

NEC 15

DOA 48
TEKKEN 43
SCV 52 (Good job!)

TFC

DOA 72
Tekken 52/50 (whichever number you believe)
SCV 18

SJ8 ( All 3 were free entry)

DOA 128
Tekken 115
SCV 118

WB8

DOA 25
Tekken (I cant seem to find these numbers...)
SCV 24

It's not just Mr. Wizard that decided and there is someone to blame. It's not him though. And he's not the only one deciding to not give us a shot. Leaving it there for now. I like the side tournament idea and I want to see what kind of support we get. Kids gloves come off if we continue to be ignored, however.

Well that pretty much confirms that he gets paid to host different tournaments. I think the smashbros are an exception because they actually inflate the turnout numbers, they don't really give a fuck one way or another. We need to learn from those guys.

And how many players do they predict will participate in Tekken 7 or MKX based on their tournament turn-outs? Oh wait...they can't because the games haven't even come out yet. They're only going off of how many participants showed up at EVO in previous years. They have absolutely no idea how many players will attend EVO for DOA. It's a lame cop out.

Speaking to the Choir with that nonsense.
MKX and T7 are virtually NEW GAMES, so they believe the turnout will be huge because...what?
They did the exact same shit with Injustice especially when it just gained a balance patch a few days before EVO on top of that.

But I do agree with Cyber in the end and will give it ONE MORE YEAR...
And here's the fucked up part...
How are they so sure Xrd will give them huge turnouts? They didn't believe Blazblue did and oh look at that, not only DID it have a big turnout but it also gave the greatest Grand Finals in EVO history... So yes, excuse my french on somehow they KNOW DOA won't have a huge turnout rate somehow despite the fact that just BEING on the main EVO stage will possibly motivate all DOA players around the world to show off their talents for everyone...

Yeah...that terrible excuse combined with the fact more and more people are willing to give the game a chance means that this is just gonna damage EVO's reputation even moreso than ever.

I have a question that Mr.Wah or CyberEvil can clearly answer. What is the clear second biggest tournament event that generates the most numbers of entrants in general? Meaning every game from Street Fighter to whatever there is on the roster of games.

There isn't a clear second largest really. Numbers fluctuate a lot for majors. EVO is the largest fighting game specific tournament. DreamHack is the largest tournament period since it's effectively a massive LAN party. The various California Regionals, CEO and NEC are likely in the running for second largest fighting game specific tournament. Hard to say which is the biggest without pulling entrant numbers and running averages for the last several years.

We have to keep pushing with big numbers. If the smash community can do this so easily, I'm sure we can do it too (not rocket science). We are fighters after all, guys ;)

A few years back it was undeniably Final Round. Now, I really have no idea.
