Also the response of "They aren't real how can you find them attractive" or "I'm not attracted to pixels" never made sense to me.

I think people don't give enough weight to symbols and images. Humans are heavily influenced by them; how can they call these "just pixels"?
This is a very touchy and dangerous subject, and if baffles me people take it lightly just because these characters don't exist.
Not everyone who will stumble upon DOA will have the same reaction as those who are okay or indifferent to it. You have to expect both those who are indifferent and those who have the need to say something.
And most importantly nobody should be shut down because they want to say express their opinion, and as "stupid" it might sound to someone, it might be a serious and important discussion to someone else.

And this topic still has life in it...huh...

Would you rather have people talk about this in a designed space for it or bring this discussion everywhere else??
I'd rather have this topic alive than bring the fanservice controversy debates on every other one.

Let's face it: this type of talk will be around until DOA dies, you should expect that some people will raise an eyebrow at the fact that half of the DLC costumes are fetish wear found in Japanese softcore/hardcore porno.

I mean, they don't wanna see it. It'd probably stop some of the complaints. But, ye who has the Nyotengu dat ass avatar would likely not care, no.

This topic knows neither life nor death. It just is...
You are not Darkseid, stop it.

Yes.

I want the option to not partake in it. It's awkward to watch it especially when I have my friends playing the game. I live in JP and stuff so it's not like I'm culturally ignorant. I think that people think we don't raise an eyebrow or something - that we all see this as kawaii and totally awesome. This is not so. I don't even want to get into that sort of thing. This is just a personal opinion of mine. I would enjoy the game more if I could disable whichever costumes I want on my PS4.

And I find the option pointless. You don't see people asking to the option in any other fighting game(Street Fighter with the recent "furry" costumes, any Tekken game past 5 with customizations, etc.) even the Soul Calibur mention above ONLY talked about flagrant violations(like people making the mail appendages from negative tail space) but there is still LOTS of people making the females and males straight out of strip clubs(hell, Lost Swords is making an art off it) and there's no option for that either.

If anything, getting an option for this is just gonna result in yet another black eye as people just gonna see it as us being ashamed of certain options and being even more divided instead of simply playing the game.

but we can't simply play the game.

When onlookers see those costumes, thats ALL they see. I literally couldn't play DOA around family because of that crap.

I understand what you're saying, however, I don't think we should compare DOA to other fighting games. The content found in DOA is unique to DOA - the only other popular game that I can think of is the Senran series - not to compare the two.

The sheer volume of fetishwear and anime stereotypes makes it almost sexually hostile for some people. I can see why you would think the message would be "shame" if we gave yet another filter to DOA -- but, many of us who don't want to see it, or have friends who object to how that portrays the characters view a "costume filter" option as customization.

Furthermore, there's is nothing wrong with being embarrassed by how they represent their female characters. I will proclaim before everyone, "I AM EMBARRASSED!" lol. It's embarrassing. It's part of the reason I'm not in a rush to go to one of the US's tournaments. I'm totally comfortable with speaking openly about sexuality and I can safely say, this game does not represent sexuality. Which is fine. If you like it and are not embarrassed show it off, flaunt the female characters etc. I just want the option to customize this game to my liking.

Some might say why are you playing this if you don't want to see that stuff? Well some of us love the gameplay but are not gynephilic and/or we may have ideals that object to how the females are portrayed. It's really no big deal to add the filter. If someone doesn't like the filter they don't need to use it. It's probably never going to happen but it's definitely something that I could mod for the PC version.
Also of note, there are people like me, who actually find costumes like Mila's C2, Hitomi's jeans and tanktop, Leon's marauder outfit, etc, etc, to be far hotter than the bikinis and bare skin.
Hell yes! I know that you mention that imagery fuels fantasy. This is true. Personally I am a tactile person and so certain textures fuel my fantasies or can trigger romantic feelings. Images communicate with our bodies as well. I'm not at all visual but if you stick me in front of the right image of a texture - BAM! lol.

I could have sworn that if you didn't download the costume catalogs, then you won't see the costume? Because if it's still that way, then this whole thread would lose its purpose. In many games, if you don't download the compatibility DLC that allows you to see it, then you won't see it. It's the same thing as a mod in a PC game: don't download it, you won't see it.

I think someone said catalogues are required to play on 360 or something. And I still wanna see the few GOOD costumes from a dlc pack.

I thought the whole discussion now went to: "Well, I shouldn't have to partake in the sexual side." I figured that if you couldn't see it, and had the power to not see it, then why continue complaining if you know you control what you see when you play?

Well for starters, it still pushes people away from the game. Seriously, go onto xbox marketplace and see it flooded with "SEXY BIKINI TIME - KASUMI, SEXY BIKINI TIME - AYANE, SEXY BIKINI TIME - HITOMI" and so on, and it doesn't exactly give a good impression of the game.

Ironically, these costume packs are what sale the most in terms of DLC. And for goodness sakes, they're just swimsuits. Women in real life wear bikinis all the time (well, the one piece and two pieces, not some of the more fantastical ones). There are apparently a lot of people who like the bikinis. I know for a fact I'll have no shame using Ayane's Aloha costume over her well designed fan costume and bad ass Ninja 2015 costume.

Seems you missed the point.

I was pointing out how all people are exposed to is fetish content.
And people wonder why DOA isn't taken more seriously.

Before DOA5 I had to honestly wonder why DOA was known as "the titty fighter". Now I don't.

There's a difference between "having swimsuits/some fetish costumes" and "it being known JUST for suimsuits and fetish costumes"

DOA5 has done well enough to get the game to a more competitive level, especially after DOA4 left a sour taste in a lot of peoples mouths. Even the other 3D fighters have started to include sexier female models and sexier costumes. Even though the sexual side of DOA is a problem to many, it still gets people talking and watching. DOA shouldn't have to reduce its sex appeal, just because people aren't mature enough to look past costumes and breasts. These are the kind of people who probably have no idea how to interact with females IRL. I know that's a STRONG generalization, but 9 times out of 10, it's kind of true. But I will say this as well: I do think Team Ninja is now starting to see that we want balance. We don't want DOA to stop being sexy, but the sexiness can be subtle while still trying to maintain that serious, gritty fighting game aesthetic that DOA5 was trying to achieve.

I would be in favor of having the option to just turn off customization in Tekken and SC when I don't feel like dealing with Bryan Fury in pigtails and purple fairy wings throwing cakes at me or trying to turn my character into a neko. Sue me.

Let's be honest. There is a decent amount of the fanbase (likely not on this site) that do not play DOA for the fighting and only care about the fanservice. So, DLC sales will always be skewed toward that fact. (I'm not saying that people who play for the fighting won't buy it, though.)

Women wear bikinis in real life usually within a certain context. Clearly DOA breaks any and all context for a lot of things for better or for worse. Like I said, I also find it dumb when I'm on Haunted Lorelei fighting Rig in a Santa outfit. That's usually what these arguments are about: context and atmosphere. I doubt people who have a problem with women wearing bikini armor to a medieval sword battle for example also have a problem with women wearing bikinis poolside.

For some people, the amount of pandering in this game breaks their suspension of disbelief to the point where they find it juvenile. I think that's the ultimate irony. People being accused of being immature for not being able to "handle" the fanservice in the game as well as people being accused of immature for partaking in the fanservice full-throttle.

I'm sorry, but I could not disagree more, and your assumptions that people that don't like the constant T&A are immature is nothing short of ridiculous.

Hence why I said that I made a strong generalization. Don't quote me unless you read the full post. But come on, people are still using DOA's T&A as a reason to not try the game or take it "seriously." That's immature, because other fighting games have displays of fan service, yet they're taken "seriously."

How does the fact that you claim it was a strong generalization negate what I said?

Let's face it, while DOA has become more focused on mechanics as of late, this was hardly ever the case in the past. The need for TK to cater to the pervs is what created the disaster that was DOA4. No one took that game as a serious fighter and deservedly so. So yes, it has a reputation for being shallow. And it's not because of gamer's immaturity.

Which other mainstream fighters have nearly as much T&A does?
