There's no problem to be had with "fetish packs." The main demographic for DOA5 is the straight male, and many of them like images of beautiful, sexy women. There's no reason to shame them or the game for presenting revealing costumes, because their sexual preferences are just as valid as any other.
If your goal is to attract more fans and have the general gaming community not snicker when you mention Dead or Alive, there may indeed be something wrong with "fetish packs".
Of course, they can go all "fuck the haters", but as a company, that only goes to a certain point. If DOA is fine with it's current fanbase, then OK. But, some people in their PR department are constantly on damage control trying to assure people on the FB page and elsewhere that DOA is indeed a fighting game and not porn. So, their releasing fetish packs isn't helping all that much with that. It's a problem if people who have been supporting you all this time are now are at your doorstep with pitchforks, so to speak.
This isn't about shaming heterosexuality. I don't think heterosexuality would ever
allow itself to be shamed. lol
You won't find any "MKX and Extreme Gore: Too much?" topic in MK community forums.
Awww, don't say that. I bet you I can find you some. lol
There have also been a few people with fatality wish lists that...let's just say have been met with some repulsion generally. Even some MK fans draw the line in some places. Ed Boon himself has said that there are places that he'd rather not go. What
all that entails...not sure, though.
Why is different when the matter is sex? Sex is better than violence. There's nothing wrong with sexualization and sex and that shouldn't be polemic. What to me is polemic is sexism. And that's a problem that infects A LOT of videogames and a lot of cultures. Not only DOA and japanese culture.
Ya know, I'm not going to be the one making the argument that sex is bad and any instances of sexualization is a terrible thing. For me, I just think that there's a time and place for stuff and there can be too much of a good thing. Even if something is technically fine in theory, it can get tiring if it's overdone. That goes for basically anything. I've partaken in several different forms of media over the years and you just start noticing stuff...over and over. Something that flies in the face of the norm and mixes things up would be welcome for me. Hell, give me a woman who
isn't sexualized. Not talking about DOA, cause that's not gonna happen. But, somewhere. Like, Mitsuko from Bloody Roar 1. Her job was not to look pretty. Her job was to mash your face in until you told her where to find her daughter. I just want Japanese media to take more risks in general. Sex sells. Yeah. But, it's safe...and boring (to me).
