All the rigged voting discussions for weeks really annoy me and as the winner of the last contest, they kinda insult me as well. Can you imagine, how I feel, or the other winners, when it's oh so obvious to all of you, that the voting was completely unfair?
I honestly think the designers should vote on our costumes. I think it'd feel better to receive recognition from the people who make the game and distribute it rather than the fanbase.
Oh, that is how it will be decided?
I didn't even notice, I actually thought too it would be the TN designers picking stuff up. I mean they do get the rights for whatever costume they pick up, so I thought by picking up the costumes with longevity in mind would perhaps out beat the local fan groups or what not. Not that I would complain on that, mind you.
I've been through some of those types of voting before, so I can understand if some view it as a little biased. One particular event comes to mind where one voted for the best technical app. The story behind it was that my mother asked me to vote for my father's friend's daughter's group per e-mail (apparently it was a school project, but with a minor price and recognition). The reason for me voting would be because "we know her". Imagine what situation that put me in. I'm an engineer, and I went to the site, and their product was obviously not the best one there. Actually it was something unoriginal not particular well done, but the biggest surprise was that the current "nr. 1" was really not that much better. Then I looked at some of the less popularize votes, and even if there was a lot of less serious contestant, this was where I found what I with some expertise figured to be the important and useful apps for the future. Now imagine how unpopular it might be of me to be tipped off about this, just to turn and vote on something else, where the vote might not even be anonymous. Even if it was the better project, and even if they obviously wouldn't win. What would you do in such a situation? All social intellectual property would of course point towards voting for my father's friend's daughter's group, because that way I personally would gain reputation score with my fellow peers, but I'd feel it'd not really be the right thing to do either in my view.
Now this on the other hand is something far more subjective as aesthetics. If a buddy asks for your vote, you got close to zero reason not to vote for it, especially if you are not that into DoA to begin with.
HOWEVER, statistically speaking those elements would in theory even out, because everyone will be voting for everything, and since everyone can only supply 1 costume and people can only vote a selected number of times from each IP. Thus those it would even out with the votes not going to someone's requested vote. If you buddy create something for Kasumi, then you can still vote for something for Mila and make a difference in that category.
Either way, if you win because of networking, in the design world that might now be horrible either. You kind of build a brand (yourself as an artist). Some people like the clothes because of the brand... Thus you win not only because you got a good enough design, but because people associate the clothing with that brand, thus like it enough to vote for it. I wouldn't consider that unfair at all. I can walk around with the clothing of someone I like and know from FSD, then that piece of costume would get higher emotional value for me, thus the value overall increases.
