DOA5 Tournament Circuit: First Week Results

Dead or Alive 5 has been out for over a week now, giving many players some time to pick up on some strategies in the forums and with each other. This hasn't prevented tournaments from being held, and we're already seeing some known players taking control of the game in the early goings.

Seasons Beatings Ascension (SBA)
Cleveland, OH

This event not only featured many of the top mid-west players including Carl "Perfect Legend" White, Chris "NinjaCW" Harris, and Eric "Ryujin" Lee. Unsurprisingly, each of these players took the top three in the tournament. In addition to these power players, Team NINJA also was on hands for the event. Many of the players were able to share their passion with not only others of the Fighting Game Community, but with Team NINJA as well. Yohei Shimbori (Dead or Alive Game Director), Peter Garza (Overseas Producer), and Tom Lee (Creative Director of Team NINJA) were all there to provide a Q&A session with the fans and watch the tournament go down in person. Yohei Shimbori even entered the tournament.

I'm personally still capturing the footage from the event since it has yet to be sent over to YouTube by the event coordinators, but I have been able to provide the finals for the event. A playlist has been made in the media section, where additional matches will be added (located here). Here's the Grand Finals featuring Carl "Perfect Legend" White and Eric "Ryujin" Lee:

Final Results:
1. Carl "Perfect Legend" White
2. Eric "Ryujin" Lee
3. Chris "NinjaCW" Harris

Game Underground Tournament Spectacular (GUTS)
Boston, MA

This was considered "Boston's First Major", and while many of the top players in the community were at Season's Beatings Ascension, Boston's growing scene was dedicated to showing off its support to the Fighting Game Community. The event, like SBA, showcased many great matches from various fighting games including Dead or Alive 5. The Dead or Alive 5 tournament was being hosted by Free Step Dodge's own Greg "Gill Hustle" Nicholas who has been trying to grow his Boston scene with his UGS arcade lounge.

GUTS had many players from other fighting games have their try at Dead or Alive 5 as well, including Virtua Fighter 5's EMP Rodney "Rodnutz" John showing off his Kokoro. Kenny "H20 Evil" Leite showed off his Pai skills transferring over from Virtua Fighter 5 while helping some of the new community members with the game and it's deeper strategies. The tournament also had Maia Allison in attendance who had many underestimating her skills as she took down each competitor up to the grand finals. The playlist for the event is available in the media section (located here). Here's the Grand Finals of the Singles event featuring Maia Allison and Matt "Mr. Wah" Ponton:

Final Results:
1. Matt "Mr. Wah" Ponton
2. Maia Allison
3. Kenny "H20 Evil" Leite

However, that's not all from GUTS. It also featured the first Dead or Alive 5 Pair Play Tag Tournament. This is where we have a tag tournament requiring each character to be played by an individual player. It gained a lot of attention at the event as deeper levels of strategies were created at the event itself. For example, tagging in on a sit-down stun to get a guaranteed sit-down stun or Critical Burst. I hope to see this at more tournaments. Here's the grand finals for the event featuring "Dragon Hustle" ("BP Dragon" & Greg "Gill Hustle" Nicolas) and "EMP FSD" (EMP Rodney "Rodnutz" John & Matt "Mr. Wah" Ponton):

Australian Launch Tournament
Melbourne VIC

The United States wasn't the only tournament that was held in the first week of Dead or Alive 5. Berzerk was able to help run an event on the first weekend as well. Featuring many of Australia's best in Virtua Fighter and Dead or Alive 5, the tournament turned out to be a nice success. There was even an incident of a match deciding on account of stealthy tiger (Video).

The event hasn't been sent to YouTube but you can view the tournament at the 3:52:00 mark of the twitch TV link: http://www.twitch.tv/couchwarriors/b/333838039

Final Results:
1. Emperor of Japan
2. fm.BigBoss
3. Tones

Stay tuned to the FSD event calendar for an event that may be near your area to help grow the scene. I can't wait to see the end of the year as these months of DOA5 breakdown heat up.

They should have more Tag Tournaments. DOA has always had the best tag mode out of any game. Period. It's about time they implement the feature in tournaments because it creates a team atmosphere, where your strategy is synched with a partner.

Props to Maia for her Lei Fang. That's some of the best holds and parries I've ever seen. It's too bad she has to deal with a great grappler from the Bass Master, Mr. Wah. Those holds, parries, and blocks are so susceptible to his advanced throws. Maybe she and Punishere should exchange notes with their Lei Fang. Punishere can pull off a long string offensive of 10+ combos. If that happens, that would be the ultimate Lei Fang!

I'm glad DOA5 is kicking off with a handful of tournaments on the first week. I can't wait to see more during the year :)

Just saw the Australian tournaments. At first, it started with intermediate players and one VF specialist, but it got better with the DOA veterans in the end. I love the crowd when it grew during the semi-finals. Every game played, they wanted The Tiger Show. It was hilarious when the tigers came out to launch fighters in the air, and the crowd goes nuts! LOL

Nice to see all this love for DOA5, this game deserves it :)

And I remain of the opinion that the Tag mode in Doa is heavily understimated.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but DOA was one of the first, if not THE first, fighting game series that had an awesome tag team. To this day, it's still a smooth transition between characters when you're in tag mode. Plus, it doesn't have that frustrating limit health damage like other games, since you can potentially fill up the life bar to full health.

The way a fight goes, you can never maintain full health for your characters if both players are really duking it out. But, sometimes, it's cool to shield your main character, and sacrifice your secondary, so you can have a strong finish once you time it just right.
