By later 2013, I've challenged myself and decided to try to deserve a name into the competitive DOA scene through training for tournaments and supporting the community's growing. I always wished DOA to become a respected game among majors 3D fighters. Team Ninja took a great step in this direction with DOA5 and 5U, so now it is the community turn and thus my one too. I thought this task wouldn't be easy at all but I deeply believe it is possible and to try it will be a big pleasure for me whether the goal is reached or not. This challenge barely began at The Fall Classic (Raleigh - USA, September 14-15th 2013). Very long journey awaits for me!
* UPDATE Sep'14 * Effectively I found that being competitive and building community are hard tasks, however to try it have been a big pleasure so far whether the results.
*** My experience in DOA ***
I grew up in Caracas city (Venezuela). I started play DOA since DOA2 at arcades. Then I bought it for Dreamcast... My DOA2 mains were Gen Fu and Helena, I also played every other chars especially my seconds: Hayabusa and EIN...
Then I bought DOA3 for first Xbox. I keep maining Gen Fu but started to leave behind Helena which became my second along with Ayane, Brad Wong and Hitomi. This time Hayabusa and EIN became thirds along with Leon.
Finally, 360 and DOA4 arrived. Brad Wong became my first, with Gen Fu. My seconds where Ayane and Kokoro, with Hitomi and Leon as thirds. I stoped to play Helena and Hayabusa at all.
Actually I'm playing DOA5 keeping Brad Wong as main and Hayate as a sencond. I always wanted a badass char and a Taekwondo fighter in DOA, so I also started to learn with Rig. I enjoy a lot new technical data feature of DOA, it has been the very first time I've decided try to master a fighting game covering all deepness of system and some chars.
*** My experience in other fighting games ***
Besides DOA, I have a long history with fighting games which mainly involves SF2, MK I to III, KI, SC I and II, and TTT.
It started at arcades with SF2 The World Warriors in 1991. I spend many good times with Champion´s Edition and Super SF2. Blanka, Vega and Ken were my respective mains. Then, MK's days kept me busy from I to III; masked ninjas blew mi mind, heheh, starting with Sub Zero in I and then Kitana in II. Perhaps that was a reason why I move to SC and took Taki as main, but the real reason was the smooth animations of SC which blew away abrupt ones of MK IV. Some Killer Instincts also had place; I only played KI's Chief Thunder, likely the cousin of my MK III's main: Nightwolf. So, at that point the 2D fighting games era came to end for me.
Glorious SC's days started also at arcades in 1998. In adition to Taki, Astaroth was also another beloved -masked- main. Next year DOA2 started to draw my attention at arcades because its animations of chinese martial arts and its visuals which were both awesome! After Dreamcast arrival, SC match ups started to move progressively to consoles but best challenges still had place at arcades. Finally I entered few years in Tekken's world only playing Chang sisters in TTT, which was my farewell to arcade era. Since 2002, I just played SC and DOA in both Xboxs; my favorites 3D fighting games of the two fighting domain: with weapons and hand to hand.
Having less and less free time, I sold my consoles and stopped playing fighting games around 2007. Towards the end of 2012 my passion for fighting games was revived thanks to arrival of DOA5 and its -very awaited by me- improvements such as new art direction and universal side steps. Since then, it has become my new -and only- fighting treasure.
*** 2019 update ***
I am become both: granpa and grumpy, but still I play DOA and take part in some tournaments. I am very happy with the experience I have had around DOA: lots of fun and good times, friends, tips and more. I'll be still around for some time, still trying to push my limits in DOA.
