People didn’t go crazy about NiCO for being “too anime”. People were annoyed by the fact that it seems to become a trend to make new characters look like marie rose clones with a different wig colour and slight different skin tone. TN has been very lazy with their character designs after DOA4. Nyotengu, Marie Rose and Tamaki are the only post DOA4 characters that actually have good design. The rest is just straight up lazy, and done before.
People did both. There were tons of complaints about her "anime" characteristics. The blue hair, lightning, pose, role in the story, too young to be an evil scientist, doesn't fit DOA etc. And I've said this before but the complaints you laid out can be applied to all the girls in the series and has always been a complaint people had about DOA even before DOA5. As for being lazy and done before, Kasumi the ninja in an outfit that looks similar to Mai, Leifang the chinese fighter in her chinese outfit, Jann lee the Bruce Lee character, Kasumi clones, Karate girl, karate guy, big wrestler in wrestling costume, and on and on. The majority of DOA's characters have been done before and they don't look any more interesting. Now, what other game has a Nico in their roster? Design wise and playstyle wise. No DOA character has gotten me excited with their design alone but Nico at least looks interesting and unique. There's no wow or shock factor in any of the DOA characters' designs. I have yet to see people go wild over DOA's character designs like how people go wild over GG's character designs.
I think he meant more original DLC packs. Nobody is complaining about DLC costumes being sold, the main issues people have are that the costumes are fetish sets that are lazily designed and only for the female cast. The price of the costume packs and the price of the seasonpasses and the content containing it.
I answered that from the POV of you guys wanting DOA to be respected and grow. People outside the community are explicitly complaining about the amount of DLC and its one of the reason people think this game is a joke. Even if TN creates quality DLC people are not going to warm up to it because of TN and DOA's current reputation. I know DOA people are fine with the DLCs. Also, you guys might complain but aren't you guys still buying it though? Otherwise this DLC practice wouldn't have caught on.
What would help is if they would release more costumes that are free, that could be purchased with the Zack Coins. What also would help is if they would dial down on the amount of costumes they release on a yearly basis. They could easily make 3 to 4 DLC packs a year for the entire cast containing cool individual designs for every character.
I would agree with you if this was before DOA6 released but reputation is extremely important and TN and DOA's reputation is in the gutter. They need to gain the people's trust first because everything they do now is basically a scam other people's eyes.
Personally, if we ignore trying to get people into DOA and making DOA look like a legitimate fighter, I want that too. Quality over quantity and be less scummy.
People have different definitions of what constitutes acceptable monetization. To some the very notion of DLC is a blight on the video game industry. Personally, I don't mind spending on DLC characters and cosmetics as long as they are reasonably priced and the game gets updates for a few years.
In the case of DOA6, I find most of the costumes uninspired and/or trashy, so I've only bought a few. Like Onryoki mentioned, I'd like to see more costumes that actually fit each character.
Also, I haven't spent a single dollar since they tried to rent hair colors and I'll wait before purchasing another DOA game, just to see if they learned something.
Regarding NiCO, while she isn't what I'd call an example of creative character design, I think she is OK. TN handled the character better than they did Marie Rose and Honkers. And since I know people who love those two that aren't any less interested in the fighting aspect than your average Tekken fan, I try not to complain too much... Still, the devs should keep the gravure stuff away from the promotional material for the west.
I assumed people here were still in the "we need to attract more people to DOA" phase so that's why I wrote what I wrote. If people are no loger worried about that then yeah, I agree with you. I don't care about what they do with DLC as long as the game is complete, competent in the fighting department, and is fun.
