It still did not surpass doa4 what the hell are u talking about? And it was on a single console.

Free version counts for Jack..
Free version counts if you're talking about ways of making money to recoup losses. With the reach that CF got, if even a fraction of those people bought DLC, then that's just more money for KT.

Where are you guys getting this data, anyway?

I will laugh if VGChartz is brought up.

I also tried finding other sources and have been getting mixed numbers. One article I read said total DOA5 (all versions both physical and digital) were closer to 1.5 million back in June so I really don't know the most reliable source.

You're right it didn't outperform 4 as much as I thought it did (VGChartz significantly underreported copies sold). Most sources actually say 4 sold 1.2 million. Why don't you think the free version should count though? 4 million downloads is pretty darn impressive regardless of how frequently the players who downloaded it play it.

Because out of those 4 million, how many purchased unlocks, bought DLC, or upgraded to the full game? How many kept it? It amounts to very little if 3 million decide to take the 'only free' route.

We don't know how successful or not Core fighters are besides the total downloads. All we can make is assumptions such as if at least 20% of like 4 million bought something that is still like 800K sales that would not have existed. Again since we don't have any reliable sources outside of the Japanese sales trackers [which doesn't keep track of digital sales] all of this is mere speculations.

Anyway DoA 4 had the advantage of being in one console [the sales are not spread out and split in numerous platforms since it's concentrated at one source], came out close to console launch for Xbox 360 [less competition], and was one of the [if not first] early fighter on a new gen console which again is less competition. The industry environment compared to past DoA games and DoA 5 is not comparable.

Even when software sales were weaker though, the past DoA games didn't have dlc revenue sources which I have to say was the key thing for why DoA 5 lasted so long in dev support. There are quite a bit of people that spent more on the dlc then the actual game throughout DoA 5's lifetime.

If each of those 1 mil out of 4 million bought even just one character that's $3,990,000

That's definitely true. The issue is mainly conjecture overall, we have no idea how many people out of those 4 million people who DL'd DOA5CF bought a few characters, costumes or tried it out and THEN bought the game itself.
While I highly doubt all 4 million bought atleast one character, I highly doubt no one bought anything either and atleast a good bit of people within that 4 million either bought a good chunk of characters and costumes, some outright bought the game and plenty is just playing it for free because unlike TR or SC:LS, you aren't really pressured to buy anything with DOA5CF.

Either way, we cannot ignore the people who downloaded DOA5CF anyway because they can easily become fans and players of DOA tomorrow and THEN help DOA prosper that much more.

4 million? Last time I heard it was 1 million... am I wrong?
But still, that's a lot of money that will be used on future developments (ni-oh, patches, futures games, collaborations, etc.)
