Are we just not accounting for how profoundly awful the voice acting is in games like this anymore? Now, were we to merely be apathetic and say "Fuck it, it's a fighting game," I'm down with that, fine. But mining for nice things to say about what is clearly some journeyman VA with no rightful future in the industry just phoooning it in hardcore? Why? We have come way too far to settle for this cringe-worthy drivel. To see where I'm coming from, observe how people speak and emote in a critically acclaimed motion picture (Live action or animated, for that matter) or other video games (The Last of Us comes to mind), for fuck's sake. Now listen to the cringeworthy acting in DOA, Dynasty Warriors and countless other titles and ask yourself: is that what people sound like? Wooden-- so devoid of even the slightest semblance of feeling that I've learned to tune it out as white noise over the years ... maybe I'm asking too much but is it so hard for our VA's here to give at least half the effort to our beloved fighting game characters as they seem to in Japan? This is also why I just don't even fuck with dubbing when I watch movies. /rant, sorry haha

I actually agree for the most part. Get some of the final fantasy VAs in on DOA, even other fighting games have better VAs than DOA. Tecmo/Koei seem to be doing poor jobs on hiring the right voice for the right characters... it's why when I play their games I tend to stick to using the Japanese voices. I'm just glad the option is there.

Compared to DOA2 and SCII , DOA5/5U has some of the best voice acting ever. The stuff only comes out bad because of the poorly translated dialogue, the acting itself is actually pretty good.
Lol, indeed! if you make that comparison DOA5 voice acting is god like xD
However, I wouldn't change JAP voices even if they hire the best English VA's in the world. I'm too damn used to those JAP voices.

Shit's getting a little bit offtopic here.

Even if a game/show/whatever had total crap JP voice acting and absolutely fantastic ENG voice acting (not saying this is true for DOA5 but the ENG is a lot better than you guys give it credit for,) I'm positive people would still trash it, calling it the 'worst voice acting ever.' I'm reminded of that person on yahoo answers that asked for a Japanese dub with English subtitles of Legend of Korra.
 Ummmm........... except Kokoro LOL.
Except Alpha.
True

It'd be cool if they went the VF route and had the characters speak in their native languages. Like Helena speaking in French and Marie Rose speaking in Swedish.

Honestly, as a player who actually tends to dislike JP voice acting in fighting games, I'd like to say two things:

-Voice acting has only improved since the old days. Compare MVC2 to MVC3.
-English keeps you away from every damn female squealing like a dying mouse every time you hit them. Definite plus.

I actually agree for the most part. Get some of the final fantasy VAs in on DOA, even other fighting games have better VAs than DOA.

Well, from the most recent crop of voices (Dimensions and 5U, just to be thorough):

Troy Baker (Snow Villiers), Yuri Lowenthal (Cecil Harvey), Laura Bailey (Serah Farron), Kirk Thornton (Saix/Isa from Kingdom Hearts - close enough), Michael McConnohie (Cagnazzo/Zeromus), Karen Strassman (Rosa Farell), Richard Epcar (Ansem, SOD from KH - again, close enough), Kari Wahlgren (Ashe), Grant George (Warrior of Light), and Liam O'Brien (Red XIII/Kain Highwind/Caius Ballad).

So this means Hayabusa, Hayate/Ein, Christie, Gen Fu, Raidou, Helena, Leon, Kasumi Alpha, Brad, and Rig have "Final Fantasy VAs".

If you add the Tales series in, almost the entire cast falls under the net.

Anyways, the entire cast is 18+ now (aside from Marie Rose, regardless of what TN says), so shouldn't they all sound like adults anyways?

DOA5 actually has some pretty high tier VAs.
Yuri Lowenthall: Sasuke Uchiha, Yosuke Hanamura, Petroklos, Ein, Hayate
Troy Baker: Snow, Booker DeWitt, Kanji Tatsumi, Joel (The Last of Us), Ryu Hayabusa, Yuri (Tales of Vesperia), Ocelot (MGSV) and alot more
Wendee Lee: (everyone knows Wendee Lee also, I forget all the roles she's been in lol too many)
Laura Bailey: Serah, Rise Kujikawa, Christie, Helena Harper (Resident Evil 6), Lady Comstock (BioShock Infinite), Chun Li etc.
Liam O'Bien: Kain (Dissidia 012), Caius (FFXIII-2 - LR:FFXIII), Akihiko (Persona 3/Persona 4 Arena), Rig
Matt Mercer: Mostly known for Leon in Resident Evil 6 and he also plays Bayman.

In Japan voice acting is serious business. Voice actors (seiyus) can become huge stars there. They take greatest care selecting a fitting voice for a character. They give attention to the smallest details. The US nor any other country can compare with this, especially if it's for a Japanese product. So the original Japanese dubbing of Anime, Games, Films is by default always better. ;)

The same could be said for the western side as well. How well do you actually know the industry? From the panels I've attended at conventions that actually feature voice/ADR directors, they hold auditions for every role and pick the most fitting based on their performance and how it fits the character, just like they would in Japan. Rarely, if ever, does the original voice even factor into the selection. In Japan, if someone casts a 'Singular Super Ninja', they get Hideyuki Hori. In the States, they get Troy Baker.

It's mostly personal preference. Mostly, I prefer English. Others prefer Japanese. Honestly, I don't care. I do care when people think JP = better, so ENG = shit-tier and vice-versa. I think Hideyuki Hori's a better voice for Ryu than Troy Baker, but the entire female cast is better in ENG. Even the ever-contested Leifang. Considering I play the female cast a little more, it's obvious I'd pick ENG.

Anyways... Marie Rose... I'm kind of hoping she gets a school uniform with a fancy-ass blazer. Maybe like this...

And yes, it must come in black.

As I said before, the males in DOA do an amazing job. I have no tiffs with them. HOWEVER, Kasumi's ENG VA is emotionless... literally. I get no sense of anything from her. In comparison to her JPN VA who actually sounds like she doesn't want to fight, she sounds hesitant and sincere. Her English VA sounds cold, and ... well nothing.

Lei is just plain annoying. Rachel is well done I have to say. Helena is just horrible, that fake french accent is just... horrendous. I have no idea why they got her to do that, she sounded better in DOA2 imo. Kokoro has a good VA but it doesn't suit her character. I could go on about why I believe the females sound better in Japanese but... alas, probably getting too off topic.

~ As for Marie Rose school uniform, I hope it remains lolita-esque. Kinda like Yui's school uniform from Diabolik Lovers.

The real reason ENG voice actors sound like shit in most games is because of the voice director. They are in charge of proper casting and on guiding the actors on how to voice the character. If they don't give a damn, you get crap voice acting. In Japan, this stuff is a huge deal, so you get better directors.

That's weaboo speak lol. David Hayter owns the role as snake and Black Lagoon as a whole has been claimed by the creator himself to be better in English, Not to mention Steve Blum and Liam O'Brian perfectly nail their rolls as Spike and Garra.

He barley speaks in the first place who gives a fuck?
Well not me 'cause I use Japanese voices, but he's actually much less stoic and cryptic in DOA5 than he was in past games. Baker has problems maintaining that reserved, wise and mysterious feeling that Hori (JP actor) does.

Not to mention Baker COMPLETELY ruins the "Rin, Pyoh, Tou, Shou, Retsu Zai Zen" quote for Momiji's tag vic pose!
Hori is mystical and ninja like, while Baker just screams at the top of his lungs.

I'm really curious who they'll get to do the english voice for Marie Rose. First name that comes to mind is Tara Strong considering her history of voicing little kids and doing video games (she was the main character in Lollipop Chainsaw I think?) I'm not sure she'd be right for the role but she definitely knows how to rock every character she gets.
