Why is DOA 4.0 better than 4.1?

    Umm yeah?

Sorry I know there are a lot of specifics but if someone has the time can they break it down?

I think in part since we are starting to get more traffic, info like this could be useful.

For one since I'm doing the offline thing, I was thinking of setting up an Xbox for 4.0 if it was worth it.

really it comes down to per character. Most changes were wither certain moves stunned in 4.0 do not anymore in 4.1 Same with launchers. I think there was saome frame rate changes as well. Lol Really dont remember. I had the notes some were but since lost them. Ill keep looking for them. I think at one point they were on DOAC Im sure someone has them

    Basically?

They forgot to finish taking shit out of the x05 build.

    For example:

    Zack's 3PPP is a 3 in 1 on a crouching opponent, guaranteeing juggle into knockback with 6KK.
The hold restriction time on wall bounces was longer: allowing for 2 in 1 wall juggles or hits (Ein's 3KK on CH or Kokoro's 6KP). Changing it in DOA4.1 made the wrestling ring useless for characters like Bass' 6F+P which would allow a backturned combo, but in 4.1 the player can hold immediately, being totally safe via distance.
Bass' 412369F+P was a 9 frame offensive hold, guaranteed after a 4F+P, 4F+P combo throw.

    Some negs of 4.0:
    Partition infinites with teleporting ninjas
Gravity was higher, making it impossible to juggle or perform air throws.

mostly on the online version damage were dropped and frame rates changed as well as criticals taken out. You could read anything missing a Cr as no longer stuns. Here is a quick video to show you how to compare the info of both files. Also my voice sucks its kinda nasally lol

Ok here is the files for everyone. Again no Tengu or Spartan. Cant find the files for them.
Each is zipped with both 4.0 and 4.1 inside each folder. Again this is just data, but gives you the frame/dmg data. Also remember any online play or offline tournaments for DOA4 are going to be played in 4.1 version. SO be sure to remember that info. Enjoy

Ive tested a few of the downloads but not all if any issues let me know.

4.0? Dude, I can tell you stories... about Christie. I may not be strat-savvy about it, but at least it's in my own words through my own experience.

Christie was a BAMF IMO. Granted, her throws still weren't strong, but her normal stance moves were so strong (especially her pokes and 6p strings, which were as effective as Gen Fu's) that almost all her stance moves were pretty dad-gummed useless in comparison, save for maybe the stance throw. And Christie's launchers with THAT kind of gravity? Holy shit. Back in the day, they were scary, but 4f+k was a particularly nasty (yet commonly abused) move. Even heavyweights were no exception to the rule, as you could get decent damage even off of them.

That's all I know. If only I knew then what I knew after February '06...

-I concur. In 4.0 it all boiled down to the cast having character specific tools that enabled solid play. Strategies that did not revolve around the triangles system were possible, giving 4.0 varied meta-games. 85% of 4.0's cast had wall combos(2 in 1's or 3 in 1's) that inflicted a nice chunk of damage and allowed wall pressure(something that is totally absent in 4.1). Kokoro's sabakis actually had a significant use, giving her a great wall combo that she was able to mix up with.

-like Sorwah has mention, these were the remnants of what doa4 was shaping out to be and were later removed. Sigh, had us watering out of our mouths. Doa4 was actually going to be the best 3d fighter.

Hmm so since I'm primarily into Offline gaming atm, sticking with 4.0 maybe beneficial in some sense?

I mean I'll tell people about the online update, but messing around with it might be fun, no? Especially since DOA4 isn't being played at any tourneys I know about.

deff could. I haven't done it in forever but I use to get a new name play online to an A+ then update and start over. It would let yah play online without updating was always fun. You just got a warning every time you clicked online. Never knew if it actual played 4.0 online or not lol never actual tested the diff. Both have there pro n cons so i could see it having its benefits

    That's a dam shame =/
I guess all we can do is hope that DOA5 will give us what we should have had already and even more, for the most part.

also just thought about it. I know the frame rates and damages have been brought up on the podcast. I thought about posting it under its own thread so people can find them. But didn't know if it was really needed since its all here. But maybe a sticky under the doa4 thread maybe a good idea. Up to you guys lol.

4.0 was really like 3.9, I remember Itagaki saying they were pressured to release an unfinished game. Same with DOA3 really, the US version was basically 2.9. That's my way of looking at it anyway.

it was possible to air throw in 4.0, it just required epic launch height.

Did any of you ever try to contact Tecmo after 4.1?

Look, I personally love DOA4 but if so many people had a problem with it. . .I mean didn't some vineberryman or something mock up a bunch of changes to DOA4? Why didn't, or don't, you guys send them that?

    And if you did then I'd love some pussy before I leave this thread :h4: :h6: :h4: :h6: :h4: :h6: :h4: :h6: :h4:

I've asked this before, but I don't suppose there's any way to access the posts I made on DOAC about the TGS and X05 builds of DOA4?

As I recall, the X05 build had VF-like stepping, frame advantage, etc. It was really nice.

That's quite a bold statement. I agree that the X05 build of DOA4 was definitely superior to the retail release and DOA4.1, but I cannot agree that it was going to be the 3D fighter.

We were in contact with Tecmo during the development of DOA4 and we are still in contact with Tecmo. DOA5 is looking to be a direct result of that contact, but we'll see how it shapes up over the next year.

As of now, Doa is pretty much an anime 2D fighter with 3D backgrounds and art assets.

I suppose you would step to set up wall carries and combos, but that's pretty much it.
